Tozer Wins 4th Harvie Wiltshire After Last Lap Scare

Sunday the 22nd of July in Winton saw another addition to the legend that is Victorian road racer Steve Tozer.

On the wrong side of the half-century mark Tozer gave an exhibition of masterly long race riding to completely dominate his rivals and win his fourth Harvie Wiltshire Memorial Race equalling Robbie Phillis’s record. It must be said that Chas Hern aided him immeasurably by crashing out in the first lap.

The race was not completely uneventful for Tozer with the bike needing to be nursed home on the last lap because it was running out of fuel. Fate however, had reserved that cruel blow for another day and he managed to get the bike to the line.

After the race and presentations were over we caught up with Steve in his pit garage and had a quick chat about the race. Remarkably, after a 16 lap race in the morning and having just finished the 30 lap Harvie Wiltshire, Tozer was working on his bike, alone, getting ready for another 16 lap race. Amazingly he looked fresh as a daisy and was raring to go.

Steve started our chat by telling me an amusing story about how he kept seeing a pit board coming out a few laps into the race saying 9 seconds. He was wondering whom it was for.

“I thought I had someone right behind me and that they were getting a board telling them they had 9 seconds back to third placeâ€

When we asked if he would be back next year to chase number 5 he replied, “We can only hope, we can only hope, its all good funâ€
