When riders pick up a new bike, the first instinct is often to start spending money on aftermarket parts straight away. But before opening the wallet, there are a few simple setup adjustments that can completely change the way a bike feels — and they won’t cost a cent.
In the latest instalment of the Always Moto WR250F Bike Inspection series, David Hogan breaks down the three free changes he makes to almost every bike once it’s run in properly.
Those adjustments are sag, lever setup, and mapping.
Suspension sag is one of the most important setup changes riders can make, yet it’s also one of the most overlooked. Every rider has a different height, weight, and riding style, which means the standard settings won’t necessarily suit everyone. Correct sag settings help balance the bike, improve stability, and instantly make the WR250F feel more comfortable and predictable on the trail.
Lever positioning is another simple adjustment that can make a massive difference during long rides. Small changes to lever angle, perch position, and reach can improve comfort and reduce rider fatigue, particularly arm pump. Drawing on his background in physiotherapy, Hogan explains how proper alignment between the fingers, hands, and forearms helps riders stay relaxed and efficient on the bike.
The final free adjustment is mapping through the Yamaha Power Tuner App. The WR250F allows riders to customise engine characteristics directly from their smartphone, dramatically changing throttle response and overall feel. After testing different settings, Always Moto has even developed its own custom tune for the 2026 WR250F in standard form.
These three changes form the foundation of the WR250F setup process and help transform the bike from a standard showroom machine into something tailored to the individual rider.
