Daniel Banks is one of the many privateers on the national circuit that do it tough round in round out and help to make the top level of motocross racing in Australia what it is today.

Hailing from South Australia and now living right on the boarder of Victoria and South Aus in Boarder Town, Banks has been a pretty regular fixture on the national motocross circuit the past few years, posting some top results in the under 19s class before moving his way up to the senior ranks where he has continued to post some solid results in the highly competitive MX2 class.

This year was looking like it could be a break out year for the 250 two stroke pilot. With a solid pre-season behind him he headed into the opening three rounds of 2014 with a new found confidence and by round three at Wonthaggi he was starting to hit his straps, firing out of the gates in the final moto inside the top three, a position he held for the first half of the race before letting the nerves of running up front get the better of him as he tensed up and drifted back to just outside the top ten.

The performance though showed him he had the speed to run up front and he was heading towards round four in his home state at the Murray Bridge circuit confident of taking the next step when disaster struck just two days out from the race.

Since then Banks has been working his way back to full fitness and also got a call up from the Penrite Oils Honda MX Team to try out for a guest ride at round 8 of the MX Nationals at Raymond Tce.

We caught up with Banks for a two part interview, first talking to the 20 year old in the day's leading up to his guest appearance aboard the Facotry Honda CRF450 and then a couple of days after the event to get his take on the who things panned out.

Fullnoise: First up Dan, where have you been this year, what has kept you away from the national scene since round three?

Banks: Coming into the 2014 season I planned to compete at all five rounds of the SA titles and also all 10 rounds of the MX Nationals. I brought a KTM 250SX 2 stroke at the start of the year and decided to do the season in the MX2 class and also the 2 stroke being a cheap option for a privateer.

Its mainly the maintenance that's the cheaper part not so much the outright cost of the motorcycle over a 4 stroke.

I attended the first 3 rounds of the MX Nationals and had some up and down results. I didn't really put a complete round together, but I did top 10 in a couple motos. I felt I had the speed but starts let me down.

I was all geared up and ready for my home round of the MX Nationals at Murray Bridge and unfortunately broke my wrist 2 days before while I was running my bike in.

I recovered fairly quick from the wrist and had my sights on Swann Hill MX Nationals, but the week prior I had to go to hospital to get my appendix out. So you could say I have had a little bad luck this season and it has kept me out of the MX National championship.

I decided to comeback when I was 100% ready and now I am.

Fullnoise: You are coming back in a big way with a guest ride with the Penrite Oils Honda MX Team. When did you first find out you had a chance to get the ride on the Honda, and what was going through your head at the time?

Banks: I spoke to Yarrive Konsky (Honda MX Team Manager) about 2 weeks before I headed over to Melbourne to do testing and told him that I was keen to get myself on a 450 for the remainder of the nationals.

I didn't find out until Tuesday the 22nd of July that's I was going to get a go on the bike the following day at Frankston. It was definitely a good feeling to be able to ride a factory bike, but i still wasn't sure if I was going to be racing it or not.

The ride on the Wednesday was a Try-out of sorts, how was that and what did it involve?

I flew over from Adelaide on the Wednesday to do some testing on the bike and to get some riding on the Honda. I felt 100% comfortable straight away and couldn't believe how well set up the bike was. There was myself and two other riders that got a chance to ride the bike.

It involved a few bike changes, laptimes etc. I spoke to Yarrive on the way back to the airport and he said he will give me a go at round 8 at Raymond Terrace.

Fullnoise: How has your preparation heading into round 8 like?

Banks: It has been pretty good, I drove over here (Melbourne) the Monday after SA Titles at Keith to get as much bike time as I could on a Honda before Raymond Terrace. Im adapting really well to the bike and cant wait to get out there and race this weekend.

Finally how are you feeling heading into Raymond Tce knowing you have a full factory Honda at your disposal

I'm felling great and so happy to have such a good opportunity. Ive been at the warehouse all week and just seeing how professional the guys are with the way they run the team is awesome.

I cant believe how well myself as a rider gets looked after, there is no stress what so ever and all I need to focus on is riding the bike.

POST RACE:
There was no doubt there was plenty of support from the Penrite Oils Honda MX team, especially from mechanic Blair Meyer, Daniels mechanic for the round - Credit: Aaryn Minerds
Fullnoise: How was the overall experience with the Penrite Oils Honda MX Team at Raymond Tce and leading up to the event?

Banks: The experience was great and I was very lucky to get an opportunity like I did. I am a bit bummed that it didn't turn out how I would have liked it to with results. There were a couple setbacks that happen on the day but I learned from them and that is racing.

My mechanic was Blair,is a awesome guy and builds great bikes. I stayed with him in Melbourne the week prior so I got to know him and his New Zealand accent pretty well! (haha)

Fullnoise: How nervous were you and did it have an effect on how you ride?

Banks: I didnt really get nervous at all, and I don't think that had any effect on the way I rode. I was pretty comfortable being apart of the team so everything was all good there. I think I had too high expectations from myself and really wanted to do well and that may have had an effect on how I rode, but I learned from that.

Fullnoise: As you told us leading up to the Raymond Tce round, you where on your way back from a broken wrist, combined with the race being the first time you have raced the Honda 450, did that make things a little more difficult leading into the weekend?

Banks: My wrist injury is fine now, the time I had off the bike may have put me back a little but I am getting on track again now. Everything was new to me at Raymond terrace, New team, new class, new bike which does make it a little more difficult compared to the other guys who have been on their bikes all season long, but I don't believe they are any excuses for my results as I believe I was a comfortable fit for the team.

Its hard to expect to do well in the first race, but I believe if I got a good amount of time in the MX1 class I would improve my results quickly.

Fullnoise: From what I could see the team were 100% behind you, they were encouraging you all day, your mechanic was always talking with you and supporting you in the mechanics area and Konsky himself has some great words to say about you on Facebook. How supportive was the team?

Banks: Yes definitely, my mechanic Blair was awesome, really supportive and gave me awesome feedback. Yarrive was good too, supporting me the entire time and still does regardless of my results. The team supported me 100% and I believe that is a part of doing well, having a good team around you as well.

Fullnoise: Finally what are your plans for the remainder of the season?

Banks: I am currently leading the SA titles in the MX2 class so i will finish the last 2 rounds off on my KTM 250 2stroke and aim at clinching the title.

My plans next season is to move to the MX1 class, so if SA Titles were over I would jump up to the 450 now, but I will finish the season off on the 250. I will be at Coolum MX Nationals racing the 2 stroke cup and MX2 class.

Fullnoise: Thanks for you time Daniel and best of luck for the remainder of the season.

Banks: Thanks, I want to give a huge thanks to Yarrive and the team for giving me an opportunity and especially on one of the best factory bikes out there. Also a big thanks to my personal sponsors for sticking by me and allowing me to do this.
