Yamaha Racing set to thunder into Echo Valley

Posted:

Round five of the 2011 Rockstar MX Nationals at the picturesque Echo Valley track in Toowoomba, Queensland, marks the halfway point of the championship with Yamaha riders and teams well placed for a strong charge home.

Each of the three factory supported Yamaha teams have a rider inside the top two in the points' standings of their respective classes and challenging for a national championship.

The Toowoomba circuit is arguably the most difficult of the nine round championships, yet the Yamaha teams are primed and ready for a big weekend.

CDR Rockstar Yamaha's Josh Coppins enters round five just nine points off the lead in the premier Pro Open class, despite not finishing the final race at the previous round. Coppins has since fully recovered from his fall and has been able to prepare properly for what looms as a season shaping round.

"Echo Valley is another track that I haven't raced, but the team tells me it is the most like a European or GP track with long hills and technical ruts. I actually like the fact of going to a new track and dialing it in quickly. I hope it gets as rough and challenging as everyone tells me it usually does as that sorts out who has done the work and who hasn't."

"I look forward to racing it this weekend," Coppins concluded.

Coppins' team-mate Jay Marmont bounced back to some form in the final two motos at Murray Bridge and has continued the improvement on the practice track during the break in between the rounds. Totally recovered from a finger injury prior to Murray Bridge, Marmont feels this weekend just might be the one to mount his charge for his fourth championship.

"I have felt as good as ever on the bike the last couple of weeks in practice," Marmont says confidently. "I took the positives from the final motos at Murray Bridge, worked hard on my training and bike set up and feel that I'm riding as good as I have in a long time. I just have to take that to the race track and everything will be fine."

No rider enters the Toowoomba round in better form thanSerco Yoshimura Yamaha's Kirk Gibbs. Gibbs dominated the Pro Lites division at Murray Bridge winning all four motos, taking the maximum 100 points and closing the point's gap considerably on championship leader Matt Moss. But Gibbs is also aware that the form must continue if he wants to win this championship.

"I am not going to win a 36 race championship on the back of one round so it is vitally important that I keep the momentum going and continue to put in 100%. Since Murray Bridge I have stuck religiously to my training program and continued to work hard on my starts as they are the most important aspect of the race," Gibbs said.

Jake Moss made his first podium of the year with a second place at Murray Bridge. Moss missed the opening round due to injury but is now back up to full fitness and is out to claw back as many points and race wins as he can.

"The championship is gone due to injury so all I can do is just wins races and rounds and see how far up the points table I can get. Toowoomba is a fun track and I came to Queensland a few days earlier to prepare, so I'm good to go," Moss states.

Unfortunately, Ford Dale won't be on the starting grid for the remainder of the 2011 MX Nationals after he sustained a serious knee injury at the Murray Bridge round. Dale damaged his ACL and will have corrective surgery in the coming weeks with a hope of competing at the Super X championship at the end of the year.

The Under 19 GYTR Yamaha team of Luke Arbon and Shaun Redhead have been up the front of their championship from the get go with the riders currently sitting in second and fourth respectively. Arbon won the 2010 Toowoomba round and a repeat this year would give his championship aspirations a huge boost.

"While a lot of guys find the track tough," Arbon says. "I don't mind it as you have to think your way around it and not just pin it," he says maturely. "My form has been good the last couple of rounds and I have worked on a couple of areas that I think needed to be improved so let's hope it pays off with a win this weekend."

Redhead continues to show plenty of spirit in his racing and is starting to show the kind of commitment it takes to be a professional racer. In the week off between the rounds, he won the Pro Open class at a local event and a moto in the Pro Lites and is ready to go this weekend.

"I like it when we are racing every weekend, I feel like I race better that way. I have kept busy doing a race at Hervey Bay and got some confidence from the win there. It's time to start winning some races at the MX Nationals now," Redhead said.

Racing starts from 10am at the Echo Valley Circuit in Toowoomba. For more information on the championship, please visit; www.mxnationals.com.au
