Wellard Yamaha Team podiums again

Posted:

After twelve long years, a round of the W.A. State Junior Motocross Championship returned to the loamy circuit of Ulinga Park, Beverly, two hours east of Perth.
Matt Fabry hung tough for sixth overall on his YZ85cc.
With the last major race meeting being in the year 2000, most riders attending had never ridden the circuit with plenty not even being born.

A moist track that was well prepped by the small country towns members greeted the Wellard Yamaha riders who were set for a good days racing on what would be an even playing field for everyone.

YZ250F rider Kyle Webster (Cully's Yamaha) came to the round sitting in third place for the title hunt. His form and speed has been steadily building with every race this season and his Yamaha machine was set up perfectly. Kyle had his sights firmly set on a podium and moving up in the championship.

The Wanneroo chargers starts were dialled in, as he managed to holeshot every race, and he was locked in a fierce battle with the front runners every moto. After finishing second in the openign two races, Webster had a perfect race three to win the moto and finish with 2-2-1 results for second overall.

"I felt pretty good out there today and my starts gave me the opportunity to fight for the overall. I have now moved up into second in the Championship which is great for the team and with two rounds to go anything can happen from here," said the enthusiastic Webster commented.

Having just turned thirteen a couple of days before the meeting, new team rider Liam Whisler (Mandurah City Yamaha) had no pressure or expectations on him in the 125cc U16 class. Liam was a Satellite rider in 2010 on an 85cc but a growth spurt ended his 85cc riding and late birthday meant he had to wait until now to be eligible to ride the 125cc machine.

With not much seat time and wanting to prove he was a worthy team member the teenager set out to show the rest of the field that he will be up there for the rest of the season posting 7-4- 5 and making the third step on the podium in his very first ride for the team.
Liam Whisler debuts for the team with a podium result
"I never really got a good start today and had to pick my way through the pack. I crashed in the first corner of the first race and was dead last but put my head down and managed to get up to fourth by the end of the race. Things can only get better the more I ride the 125 and I'll look forward to the next meeting now I know where I sit in the field," a happy Whisler had to say.

Nine year old Pocket Rocket Matt Fabry (Causeway Yamaha) was looking to move up in the 85cc Championship and after an awesome second place in race one looked like doing just that.

But he is still doing his apprenticeship in the class and Matt learned you need to take the good and the bad and sometimes they come one race apart.

Race two saw him get caught in a pile up at the start of the second race that had him at the back of the pack once he got going. Unfortunately Matt was never going to make up the lost ground and had to settle for a fifteenth place finish.

Never saying die the young charger posted a solid fifth in the last moto to take sixth outright for the day.

"I was doing well today until my crash, the second place was good points for sure but then the second race crash really didn't help.

"I've moved up to fourth in the championship which is pretty good and I have still got six races to see if I can make any more ground," Matt had to say.

"Once again our Wellard Yamaha Team has shown depth and consistency. Kyle was just on fire today and is back to his best. Liam's debut for the team was outstanding and to be on the pace so quickly really shows he will be a talent in the future. As for young Matt he has the heart of a lion, I know how hard this kid works as the whole team does off bike training sessions together. I don't think he knows he is only nine years old as he never gives in"

"We will go into the next round and see if we can chip way some more points, but I am proud of the whole team and their effort this season, it is what make it all worthwhile," Team Manager Peter Strickland explained.
