Australian KTM Pairing of Todd Waters and Kirk Gibbs competed in round two of the New Zealand Motocross Championships over the weekend with both riders coming around with some positive results.
Waters, was able to make up for round one where a bike issue kept him off the podium, by racing to second place overall on Sunday behind Championship leader
Cody Cooper at ?. The result seen the Queenslander move in to third place in the championship with two rounds remaining.
‰ÛÏThis track was tough to learn because it changed so much throughout the day from really rutty and grippy to then become hard and skatey with the same ruts. It was like two different tracks.' Waters reflected.
"Coops and I had some really good races together. I had some lines that were better and I‰Ûªd pass him but then he‰Ûªd follow for a bit and get me back.
"In the end I had nothing for him so hats off to him for beating me. I have a really good relationship with him and I think that makes for good racing." Waters added.
"I'm loving racing here as prep for the nationals, it if we came and just smoked it wouldn‰Ûªt be any good to us at all. Good solid racing is what we‰Ûªre after so to have Coops riding really as we develop the bike is helping a bunch," he concluded.
For Gibbs the day did not quite go as well as round one as the South Australian suffered a crash in race one that set him back for the day.
Gibbs was able to bounce back during the afternoon and finished the day on a high with a fourth place finish in the final moto of the day, leaving him in 7th place for the round and 4th in the championship standings.
‰ÛÏThe track was full-on and another good experience, but I didn't particularly gel with it." Gibbs stated. "I couldn‰Ûªt get the best from the concrete starts and really struggled to time my passing opportunities around the places that were narrow.
"Where I fell in Race 1 we sort of funneled into a corner after a section of tabletops and jumps. I made a pass and thought I had the line, but he mustn‰Ûªt have seen me and the two of us jumped for the same entry point." Gibbs explained about his crash during moto 1.
"Overall I‰Ûªm not happy with how I went today but hey, if motocross was easy, everyone would be good at it," he concluded.
