Teterin Motosport rider Jordan Burgess stepped up to the premier Superbike category for the sixth
round of the Australian Superbike Championship at Phillip Island in Victoria last weekend, scoring 10th
overall and placing on the privateer podium in third for the weekend.
It was a brilliant showing for the 24-year-old in what was just his second Superbike appearance,
competing in the category on his Superstock 1000 machine mounted with the Superbike-spec slick
tyres for the weekend.
With the final Superstock 1000 round not scheduled to take place until the series finale at Phillip
Island on 27-29 November, Burgess and his team decided to build their experience by entering the
Superbike class for last weekend‰Ûªs penultimate ASBK round, staged alongside the Australian round of
the MotoGP World Championship.
Burgess qualified his Motologic Racing-prepared Honda CBR1000RR 12th on the grid for the four
races to be run over the weekend, with races two and four counting toward the official championship
standings, while races one and three were non point-scoring races.
The opening race saw Burgess race to a well deserved 10th position ahead of many Superbike
regulars on Friday afternoon, before scoring another 10th in race two on Saturday afternoon, and then
wrapped up his weekend with two more 10th places on Sunday in front of a race day crowd of over
50,000 spectators.
A highlight of Burgess‰Ûª weekend included a race two battle with factory Kawasaki Racing Team rider
and former World Supersport Championship runner-up Kevin Curtain where Burgess was able to
come out on top, also beating out Yamaha Racing Team factory rider Dan Stauffer and last year‰Ûªs top
privateer Chris Trounson in the third race of weekend.
Burgess will now return to Superstock 1000 duties at the season finale in six weeks time, where he
currently sits second in the title chase, maintaining a mathematical chance at winning the
championship as he enters the round.
"It was a good weekend for me, an awesome experience to race with the guys in the Superbike class. I
knew that I had the pace to run toward the top of the pack, but I sort of surprised myself with how
everything went," Burgess said.
"We were experimenting with a new Dyna Bike Pro Interceptor system and that made
the bike feel really smooth in the power and linear. I put my head down and tried to learn as much as I
could, racing up toward the front as closely as I could.
"I went into the championship races with a good
mindset and I was really happy in race one to get in front of Kev Curtain, we got the bike handling
really well. It was a good result.
"In the second championship race I had a good start before the race
was red flagged, and then once the tyres got cold I lost a bit of grip in the front ‰ÛÒ almost crashed at
Turn Two. I have to give full credit to my team and I‰Ûªm really over the moon with the weekend. To be
third overall in the Privateer Cup was surprising, I was stoked to do it on a Superstock bike, so
hopefully some people are taking note because I want to get on a Superbike for next year and
continue moving forward.
