Tim Gajser will miss this weekend’s MXGP of Portugal as he continues to recover from the shoulder injury sustained in Switzerland.

The five-time world champion and current MX1 championship leader had been hopeful of returning to action in Agueda, but after an intense week of physiotherapy, he and his medical team made the difficult decision to sit out round seven.

The injury occurred during Sunday’s racing at the MXGP of Switzerland when Gajser collided with a solid man-made mound positioned inside the track boundary. Despite receiving immediate treatment and continuing care after leaving the venue, the Slovenian’s condition has not improved enough to withstand the physical demands of world championship motocross.

Gajser, who currently leads the MXGP standings by 27 points, had enjoyed a strong start to the 2025 season, claiming three wins and standing on the podium at all six rounds prior to his crash. At the time of the incident, he held a 49-point lead in the championship.

“Obviously, everyone knows that I dislocated my shoulder in Switzerland, but despite the best care possible since leaving the track, I will be unable to line-up for the MXGP of Portugal,” Gajser explained. “I tried my hardest with all the physiotherapy and we did everything we could to be ready for this weekend, but it just hasn’t worked out. There was hope earlier in the week, as things were going well, but this is an injury you can’t force or rush to be better than it is. Of course, I am extremely disappointed to be missing any racing and now we will see what we can do in the coming days to figure out our next move. I’d like to say a big thanks for all the messages of support I have received from all my fans, and I hope to see you at the races soon.”

Team HRC General Manager Marcus Pereira de Freitas acknowledged how hard Gajser had worked to return, stating that everyone was hopeful mid-week, but in the end, the right decision was made to prioritise the Slovenian’s health. He also expressed confidence that Gajser would return as soon as he was ready and that the team would continue to support him every step of the way.

Gajser had claimed three GP wins and podiums at all six rounds before the injury, and while the setback is disappointing, he remains firmly in title contention as the season progresses
