Racing is Racing. But the old saying of to finish first. First, you must finish never rang more true than on last Saturday in Minneapolis.

With one lap to go. Chase Sexton crashed and crashed hard. Not only ending his night but seeing him put on Concussion Protocol for his post-crash assessment by the Alpinestars medical crew. Chase went full Ricky Bobby (Talladega Nights) on the medical crew. Literally running away from them after being wobbly on his feet and unable to get his leg over his bike. The post-concussion symptoms for each person are different and this is one example of where things can get wild depending on the area of the brain that took the impact.

A concussion is a serious injury and something that seems to still be taken lightly in the Pro ranks of the AMA. But, in this instance, Chase has been put on the AMA protocol to review him for a minimum of 5 days before he can be deemed clear to race again. This will be confirmed on race day this Saturday in Arlington when he has to complete the online Impact test. This is a test that is taken by all riders before the season and repeated after any noted head knock to compare scores for appropriate return to riding/race clearance.

For the rest of the field, Max Anstie took another hit this week in Minneapolis. Whilst riding through a shoulder injury. He crashed again this week and did some significant damage to his ribs and lung. This will see him out for a few weeks. But the question has to be asked. Was it worth it to ride through the injury? Did the injury from the shoulder, lead to the crash that caused the rib injury this week? We might never know but it has to be considered when these Pro level guys take the risk and try to ride through injury.

Max Vohland’s East Coast series may have not lasted too long. One lap into the main event and he was seen leaving the track holding his arm. But in a manner that suggested a Collarbone or shoulder injury. Time will tell if he will miss Supercross this year or not. His Incomplete Fracture is better than a fracture but one more crash and it becomes a complete fracture very quickly.

Vann Martin has also taken a big injury at Minneapolis. Thoracic spine compression fracture that has required multiple surgeries already this week since the race day. Vann will be out for some time and will require a lot of support with his recovery. Check out https://road2recovery.com/ to find ways to support his recovery if you are able.

One guy you might not have seen yet to hit the injury list is Aaron Plessinger. A mid-week training crash has seen him break his lower arm and will likely be out for around 6wks. Tough news for AP7.

Heading into the second triple crown of the year for the 450s and first for the East Coast 250 guys. I’m interested to see how the competitive 250 class handles this format. These younger guys with a history of crashes might find it hard to control the rage and stay off the ground. This might be another busy injury update week ahead. As always I will be tuning in to find out!

If we have missed a rider or got an injury update wrong let us know. alwaysmoto2019@gmail.com or @always.moto on Instagram

See you next week Moto fans.
