Just when you think the race is done, BAM! The unexpected crash that takes down two riders in the top five.

Vince Friese is far from one of the top fan favourite riders but everyone can appreciate the skills he displayed on Saturday night at Anaheim 2. Lead almost to the checkers for his heat race.

Should have got the job done there if not for a tuff block kiss of death. Then running in a podium position in the main. Until the last lap. Then those monster whoops jumped up and sent him sideways. If the insult was losing the podium. Then the Injury was in the shape of a Dunlop tyre from a PC Kawi that speared him in the helmet.

Somehow Friese manages to run right into Jo Shimoda’s path. What’s even more impressive from the situation is that somehow Friese is able to get up after the two hits from the Kawi to stumble along beside the whoops. Despite the early footage that suggested to me he was a bit concussed.

Reports since the race have been all clear for Vince Friese and he is not on concussion protocol. Surprising from my point of view but not being on the floor you never know what the initial assessments of Friese revealed and he may have been all fine immediately. Vince only managed to bite his tongue according to his updates. Rather minor compared to how it could have been.

Poor Jo Shimoda didn’t escape the situation without injury either. Luckily for Shimoda, he was able to control the first part of his post-Friese contact but then caught the handlebars under the helmet leading to a laceration to the chin. At this stage, both Vince Friese and Jo Shimoda will both be lining up at Glendale this Saturday. But things could have been very different for both guys.

Aaron Plessinger was another injury that lead to a DNF in Anaheim 2. In Aaron’s own words he lawn darted into the concrete floor of the track. Surprisingly another head impact was seemingly cleared on the stadium floor and did not require review of the AMA concussion protocol. Plessinger will also be on track at Glendale.

Dilan Schwartz was a non finisher in Anaheim 2 also. No info on Dilan from himself or the BarX Suzuki team is available at this time. No word if he will be racing this Saturday.

In a somewhat quiet injury week compared with the opening four rounds of the series. The last reported injury is Ryan Surratt. A TFCC injury to his wrist should be manageable for the remaining west coast rounds. More on this injury is in the injury list below. Time will tell if he can hold on well enough to race at the top level. Probably not the best fantasy pick for the AlwaysMoto League on Pulpmxfantasy.

This weeks race being triple crown will throw out a few more chances for injury. Three gate drops instead of 1 per class. More time on track in total adding fatigue into the mix for injury risk factors. Along with a growing list of riders carrying bumps and bruises into the round. Will we see more injuries? Or is it more likely we see a fifth winner in the 450’s in five rounds?

Remember to stay up to date on all the injury news via our social feeds @always.moto on Instagram.

See you next week Moto fans.
