The Emergency Department – 2022 AMA Supercross Round 3 – Who’s In And Out

Joey Savatgy will continue to race with a tornACL.

Well, another exciting week of Monster Energy Supercross has gone by with another on its way. For those following on at home, you might have to check my predictions for last week.

I didn’t call Jason Anderson for the win. But I did talk up his chances of a podium and Ken Roczen’s past poor results in the stadium. I just need to do better in the 250 predictions for the AlwaysMoto Fantasy league on Pulpmx fantasy.

At the end of racing in Oakland. It seemed a quiet night on the injury front. But by Monday and some investigations later on a few DNF and DNS results. It soon turned out to be quite the injury riddle round.

Not to mention word of some injury and illness from the previous week coming to light after the race also.
Big news for Joey Savatgy. Confirming a mid-week crash tore his ACL. It seems difficult for many. But this is 1. A very serious injury. But also 2. This is an injury many people continue to ride and race through.

How can it be both serious and not that bad you can still race? Well, short answer. It depends on what part of the ACL is torn and what other damage is done at that time of injury. Adding to that is how well the first few days of rehab are managed post-injury. As in, can swelling be controlled and removed? There tends to be a lot of swelling with this injury as it’s common to rupture the nearby blood vessel with the ACL. The next aspect is how well the rider is with Quadricep to Hamstring stability? Without an ACL. There is nothing but your Hamstring control to stop your femur from smashing into your tibia and tearing the meniscus or bone cartilage every time you want to stop walking or change direction.

So basically, if you can control swelling and control your knee via your Hamstring. For Moto purposes, riders can be completely fine. So far, Joey Savatgy has managed the swelling aspect well. The next 2-3wks is critical to avoid dabbing his foot. As well as learning the Hamstring control aspect. If he can do these things he will be fine. But look to see his right foot on the footpegs a lot more than usual from now until he gets his ACL repaired. When that is might be soon if he has pain or bad results. Might be the end of his career if he figures out the above.

On the illness front, Cooper Webb was reported to be “under the weather” before and during Oakland. Not to mention numerous riders not able to race due to Covid positive results. This will be an ongoing issue.

Some other news not yet confirmed at the time of typing this. We might see a championship contender missing from the 250 gates in San Diego. Something we will confirm for next weeks edition if it turns out to be accurate.

So what do we expect for San Diego this week?

Probably another week of Adam Cianciarulo fading back from a good start due to ongoing recovery from his AC joint injury. Probably about 8-9th I expect this week as he should be improving. By February I expect him on the podium.

Can Christian Craig finally string together an injury-free championship run? He tends to start the series well. But once pressured, has a tendency to crash and get injured. At this stage, no one has been able to put any pressure on him. Will this continue?

Can Hunter Lawrence get a start inside the top three in the main? Be nice from an Aussie fan point of view.

Will Jalek Swoll pass his concussion protocol test and get more than half a lap into a race? I hope so. You never want to see a rider go down like that at all. Particularly in the first lap of his season.

As always this is what we know at the time of typing this. More may come to light between now and race day. Stay up to date on our social feeds @always.moto on Instagram.

See you next week Moto fans.
