The Emergency Department – 2022 AMA Supercross Round 1 – Who’s In And Out

Adam Cianciarulo is coming into the season under an injury cloud after a Shoulder separation about 3 weeks ago.

Just like that, we are back with Supercross! Damn that was a long stretch between the action with no (Except Paris SX) offseason SX’s particularly our own Australian Series not occurring again.

Best of all with the return of the Supercross season. Comes with it a feeling of normality. We are returning to Anaheim for the season opener. We have only Saturday races. 17 rounds in 18 weeks and we start with the West coast 250 class on the West coast. Ah, Normal programming again finally!

For the start of this season, I wasn’t expecting to put out an article until after round 1. But given the very busy injury news coming out this week. I felt I needed to get ahead of the curve and show you who is already on the injured list.

Adam Cianciarulo is coming into the season under an injury cloud after a Shoulder separation about 3 weeks ago. He has ridden this week but had been off the bike for about 2-3wks prior to that. It could be just the rest he needed leading into the season. Or it could be all downhill once the first gate drops from an injury standpoint.

Justin Cooper will miss possibly all of the Supercross series in 2022 after suffering a Lisfranc Fracture to his foot only days before A1.

Benny Bloss won’t be racing until late in the season at best after a lower leg fracture and a collarbone fracture in late December.

The remaining injury list is below. But there are also some rumours of minor crashes to other guys rolling around that arent necessarily going to impact much as they were East Coast guys already but it’s interesting to note that not everyone’s Pre-season has gone as smoothly as they will have you believe at the Press conference earlier this week. Once I confirm some more details i will drop these names in the list also over the coming weeks. The other unknown is how many more injuries will occur or be spoken about finally in the time between me typing this and you reading it? How many guys will go down in the first practice and timed sessions at A1? Hopefully none. But if history is anything to go by. There will be at least a handful. Things to keep an eye on if your are playing fantasy in 2022.

So outside of injuries for a sec. You have to wonder. Will this be a repeat year for Cooper Webb? Will Kenny finally get it done? Will Eli surprise on Blue? Can AC or Sexton make it through the entire 17rounds? I don’t know what’s going to happen. But I cant wait to watch and find out!

See you next week Moto fans.

Jett Lawrence was planning to race West Coast. But after a practice crash in the final days of riding before A1 will now shift to East Coast with Hunter Lawrence running the West Coast for HRC now.

THE INJURY LIST – GOING INTO ROUND 1 – ANAHEIM 1:

As always, If your favourite rider is on this list, most likely they have been to the Emergency Department recently.
This list has who we know has an injury. What that injury is, as well as when we expect them back at the races. Maybe some extras if you’re lucky!

If we have missed a rider or got an injury update wrong let us know. alwaysmoto2019@gmail.com

Jett Lawrence #18 – HRC
Injured When? Early January 2022

Injured What? Unspecified Rib injury. Looks to be just beat up. Maybe some rib cartilage issues.

Return to Riding Timeframe – 2wks

Next race prediction – Will now switch to East Coast 250’s.

Adam Cianciarulo #9 – Monster Energy Kawasaki
Injured When? Early December

Injured What? AC joint Grade 3 (Shoulder separation). This is where the ligament that holds the collar bone into the shoulder blade at the point of your shoulder is damaged and your collarbone sticks up making a nice step to your shoulder. AC missed about 3 wks of preseason riding. But has had one week back before A1. Should be fine with tape and pain med’s for A1 and build further into weeks 3-4.

Return to Riding Timeframe – 3wks

Next race prediction – Anaheim 1

Justin Cooper #32 – Monster Energy Star Racing Yamaha
Injured When? 4/1/22

Injured What? LisFranc fracture to Foot

Return to Riding Timeframe – approx 6months currently reported by his surgeon.

Next race prediction – At best MX round 1. At worst MX round 6.

Benny Bloss #73 – Team Tedder KTM
Injured When? 22/12/21

Injured What? Lower Leg fracture (Unconfirmed Tib/Fib) and Collar Bone fracture

Return to Riding Timeframe – If Tib/Fib, approx 4months.

Next race prediction – Potentially missing all of SX

Levi Kitchen #59 – Monster Energy Star Racing Yamaha
Injured When? Early November

Injured What? Shoulder blade fracture

Return to Riding Timeframe – 5wks

Next race prediction – East Coast 250s round 1.

Joey Crown #355 – Privateer KTM
Injured When? Early November

Injured What? Unspecified multiple fracture

Return to Riding Timeframe – unclear

Next race prediction – At best East Coast 250s round 1 but not enough info to confirm at this stage.

Bobby Piazza – Privateer
Injured When? 5/11/21

Injured What? Compound fracture to Left Wrist – suffered on Day one of Supercross training. Will most likely miss the entire Supercross season

Return to Riding Timeframe – approx 4months

Next race prediction – Sometime in the Outdoor nationals at best for 2022.
