The Emergency Department – 2021 AMA Pro Motocross Round 10 Crawfordsville – Who’s In And Out

Christian Craig joins the injury list following a spectacular crash at Budds Creek but is aiming to be back for Pala.

Budds Creek was an exciting, yet reserved race from my viewpoint. We got a lot of close racing at the front where not much passing went on. Particularly those 450 moto’s.

Yes, Dylan Ferrandis moved through in moto one and made the pass for the win on Ken Roczen in Moto 2. But otherwise, it was a high-speed chess match for the most part. The track didn’t seem to open up the racing as much as previous rounds. Was that from the shortened race track that resulted from rain the days before the event? Did the depth of the field play a factor? There were a few more main guys out of the event at this later point of the season.

On the injury front, it’s been another one of those odd rider update weeks. The non-descript “Banged up” term has been out in force again. Christian Craig who thought he would try his hand at gymnastics in the turning rollers near the finish line in moto one is out this week. You guessed it. “Banged up”.

The ever aloof with injury details, Michael Mosiman, his status remains unclear following his “Banged up” diagnosis. Not Banged up but just, “Team and I decided to sit out” update from Stilez Robertson. For a few weeks now there has been no info on what Robertson is dealing with and despite numerous attempts, to find out from the team. We still get the same info. Then to add to the interesting news, Seth Hammaker as reported by the official Media release for the Pro Circuit Team. Seth is to be racing this weekend. But potentially not racing if you read elsewhere. Again the info leaving Budds Creek was “Banged Up”, but we hear there may be a head knock that puts him on the AMA concussion protocol making him potentially unavailable.

Just in case you are wondering too. Colt Nichol’s “Banged Up” injury from Washougal continues to be an issue. His shoulder is still not good enough to race. Meaning there’s more to that injury than just “Banged Up”. Most likely a minor labrum tear or some bone bruising. Which to me is not banged up. That’s an injury!

Something that has made these other injuries seem insignificant is the news of Garrett Marchbanks health issues. He has been diagnosed with Addison’s disease. I dive into what that is below. But this issue will be something he has to manage long term and has some serious risks if not monitored correctly. As much as he has indicated he will try to race the last two rounds. I would expect him to have some minor issues with initial medication management adjustments that might prevent this from happening given the short timeframe for this Hormone Replacement therapy medication to be running smoothly.

Aaron Plessinger unfortunately at Budds Creek went about as well as I predicted in last weeks edition. Plessinger managed to make it to about halfway in Moto one before he succumbed to his injuries from the Unadilla Loop Out. With another week of recovery and heading to his home track. I’d expect to see a much better outcome for Plessinger this weekend.

Not much of the season left to go with only six moto’s for each class. Can Jett Lawrence, the Aussie boy get on top in the 250’s? Everyone will be tuning in to find out. For us, Aussie fans it’s definitely a highlight of the racing. Just disappointed about the news the Lawrence brother cant ride Des Nations this year. Although I’m personally not convinced that the event will go ahead. But who knows. The world is crazy and let’s just hope the racing continues whilst we are locked down in some of these Australian States.

Until next round moto fans.

As always, If your favorite rider is on this list, most likely they are seeing a doctor or been to the Emergency Department recently.

This list has who we know has an injury. What that injury is, as well as when we expect them back at the races. Maybe some extras if you’re lucky!

If we have missed a rider or got an injury update wrong let us know. alwaysmoto2019@gmail.com

THE INJURY LIST – GOING INTO ROUND 10 – CRAWFORDSVILLE:

Christian Craig #29 – Monster Energy Star Racing Yamaha (AMA SX/MX)
Injured When? Rnd 9 Budds Creek

Injured What? No details for Christian here, just another non-descript “Banged Up” response from the team.

Return to Riding Timeframe – 1wk hopefully.

Next race prediction – Christian is aiming to be back for Pala.

Garrett Marchbanks #48 – ClubMX Yamaha (AMA SX/MX)
Injured When? Rnd 9 Budds Creek

Injured What? Not so much an injury, but a health issue that has been diagnosed since he completed forearm pump surgery during the season. Marchbanks has been diagnosed with Addison’s disease. This is a rare but serious issue where the bodies adrenal glands don’t produce enough of certain hormones. Specifically cortisol and aldosterone. Cortisol helps fight infection when the body is stressed and aldosterone helps maintain the bodies fluid/blood volume. These hormones are produced by the adrenal glands that sit on top of the kidneys.
This is quite a serious health issue for Marchbanks to now learn to manage. Particularly to continue his professional racing career with this disease. Likely that he will now need hormone replacement therapy (HRT medication) to assist his management of the condition.

Return to Riding Timeframe – Marchbanks has initially indicated he will be trying to return for the final two rounds in California, but that will be updated next week. So 1-2wks off the bike.

Next race prediction – Pala? Maybe.

Seth Hammaker #150 – Monster Energy Pro Circuit Kawasaki (AMA SX/MX)
Injured When? Rnd 9 Budds Creek

Injured What? Reports are he hit his head during practice and then again during moto one.

Return to Riding Timeframe – If the report of his head injury is correct. He will be following the AMA return to riding protocol post-concussion, meaning a 1-2wk minimum recovery period. But conflicting info from the official team PR today indicating he will be riding IronMan. So take this info lightly.

Next race prediction – IronManMX? Maybe

Aaron Plessinger #7 – Monster Energy Star Racing Yamaha (AMA SX/MX)
Injured When? Rnd 8 Unadilla

Injured What? Bruised Lung and Liver

Return to Riding Timeframe – <1wk

Next race prediction – IronManMX, hopefully, it’s better than his effort at Budds that ended early with lingering issues from the Unadilla crash.

Pierce Brown #45 – RedBull GasGas Troy Lee Designs (AMA SX/MX)
Injured When? Rnd 8 Unadilla

Injured What? Concussion and Broken Collarbone

Return to Riding Timeframe – Minimum 4wks for collarbone.

Next race prediction – Supercross 2022

Ramy Alves #220 – JMC MS Racing (AMA SX/MX)
Injured When? Rnd 8 Unadilla

Injured What? Shoulder Dislocation

Return to Riding Timeframe – If completing surgery will be 12wks minimum off the bike.

Next race prediction – Supercross 2022

Derek Kelley #73 – Privateer Gas Gas (AMA SX/MX)
Injured When? Rnd 8 Unadilla

Injured What? Concussion

Return to Riding Timeframe – 1-2wks pending passing the AMA concussion protocol.

Next race prediction – IronMan MX

Dominic Thurry #464 – ClubMX Yamaha (AMA SX/MX)
Injured When? Rnd 8 Unadilla

Injured What? Torn Bicep sustained during practice without falling.

Return to Riding Timeframe – Minimum 3 months post-surgical repair

Next race prediction – Supercross 2022

Justin Barcia #51 – RedBull GasGas Troy Lee Designs (AMA SX/MX)
Injured When? Before Rnd 8 mid-week.

Injured What? Head Knock, and other bruising to chest and elbow.

Return to Riding Timeframe – 1-2 weeks pending passing the AMA concussion protocol.

Next race prediction – Sitting out until Pala at the earliest.

Michael Mosiman #42 – RedBull GasGas Troy Lee Designs (AMA SX/MX)
Injured When? Before Rnd 8 mid-week.

Injured What? The terribly quiet and hidden response to his injury is “Banged up”.

Return to Riding Timeframe – 2wk required for recovery from the undisclosed injury(s).

Next race prediction – IronManMX

Colt Nichol #64 – Monster Energy Star Racing Yamaha (AMA SX/MX)
Injured When? Rnd 7 Washougal 24/7/21

Injured What? Shoulder – Initial reports from Colt indicate only bruising to the shoulder.

Return to Riding Timeframe – colt was off the bike for approx 2-3wks after his crash at Washougal.

Next race prediction – Pala? Maybe.

Adam Cianciarulo #9 – Monster Energy Kawasaki (AMA SX/MX)
Injured When? December 2020. Re-aggravated in a crash at Millville

Injured What? Ulnar Nerve compression (Cubital Tunnel Syndrome)

Return to Riding Timeframe – Adam has had surgery just after Millville. Would expect him to be off the bike for 8-12wks. Putting him back on the bike around October 2021. He is already doing a lot of gym-based rehab with no sign of limitations on his operated elbow.

Next race prediction – Supercross 2022

Alex Ray #83 – SGB Maxxis Kawasaki (AMA SX/MX)
Injured When? An old lingering injury

Injured What? Both Wrists. A left Scaphoid fracture that had a non-union (Didn’t heal). This required a bone graft from his leg and hip. The right wrist was fused and he had carpal tunnel release surgery completed at the same time.

Return to Riding Timeframe – Minimum 6 weeks from surgery date which was completed just after Millville.

Next race prediction – Supercross 2022

Freddie Noren #43 – Privateer KTM (AMA SX/MX)
Injured When? Before Rnd 7 at Washougal

Injured What? Knee – Fractured Metacarpal

Return to Riding Timeframe – Freddie had surgery on Monday after Washougal. Most likely off the bike for 4wks.

Next race prediction – Pala for Rnd 11.

Nate Thrasher #91 – Monster Energy Star Yamaha (AMA SX/MX)
Injured When? Rnd 6 Millville 17/7/21

Injured What? Knee – Dislocated Shoulder

Return to Riding Timeframe – approx 3months. Nate has confirmed he had shoulder surgery to repair his labrum.

Next race prediction – Potentially out until East Coast SX 2022

Max Miller #604 – Privateer KTM (AMA SX/MX)
Injured When? Rnd 4 RedBud 3/7/21

Injured What? Knee – ACL tear, Medial Meniscus tear and bone bruising.

Return to Riding Timeframe – Approx 6months post repair. Max has had surgery on 16/7/21 and is on the road to recovery.

Next race prediction – Potentially East Coast SX if he is aiming to do Supercross in 2022.

Phil Nicoletti #715 – Motosport.com ClubMX Yamaha (AMA SX/MX)
Injured When? Re-Aggravated an old Injury in practice at RedBud on 3/7/21

Injured What? Knee – ACL tear, Medial and Lateral Meniscus tear

Return to Riding Timeframe – Approx 6months post repair. Phil had surgery two weeks ago and is now in the early stages of recovery and rehab.

Next race prediction – Phil didn’t ride SX this year. So if he is on the same schedule we won’t see him again until Motocross starts up again in May 2022.

Henry Miller #70 – Privateer KTM (AMA SX/MX)
Injured When? 23/5/21 during preparation for Outdoors initially tore the ACL. Had attempted to manage conservatively and return to racing at High Point. However, during practice/qualifying he has re-aggravated and has now undergone surgery. AlwaysMoto has confirmed Henry’s surgery went well on 30/6/2021 and he is on the road to recovery. Henry Miller has had a Patellar tendon graft used for the repair of his ACL.

Injured What? ACL tear and tibial plateau fracture.

Return to Riding Timeframe – 5-6months post ACL repair

Next race prediction – Supercross 2022 pending ability to get pre-season completed prior to January opener.

Zac Osborne #16 – Rockstar Energy Husqvarna Factory Racing (AMA SX/MX)
Injured When? Prior to Daytona Supercross “March 2021”

Injured What? Disc injury (Reported to be herniation) to the lumbar region.

Return to Riding Timeframe – Therapy with Dr Keilman is continuing. Still expect him to be off the bike for a further 2-4wks. No rush to return for Zac other than October for Pre-Season SX testing.

Next race prediction – Supercross 2022. Although in the media there is talk he is considering retirement. Have to wait and see on that one.

Jason Anderson #21 – Rockstar Energy Husqvarna Factory Racing (AMA SX/MX)
Injured When? Mid Week prior to Rnd 2 of MX

Injured What? Fractured Hand and some teeth knocked out.

Return to Riding Timeframe – Missed about 6-7wks with recovery

Next race prediction – Should have been on track this weekend at Unadilla. But hearing talk of an ankle injury that required surgery recently and will keep him out until Supercross 2022. Jason may not be seen on a Husky again. The next time he is riding will most likely be on another brand.

Cameron Mcadoo #31 – Monster Energy Pro Circuit Kawasaki (AMA SX/MX)
Injured When? Rnd 1 Pala – 29/5/21

Injured What? Knee ACL tear with an avulsion fracture. This is where the ligament tears a piece of bone with it. In this case off the tibial plateau.

Return to Riding Timeframe – Minimum 5months.

Next race prediction – Not until Supercross 2022 and likely the 250 coast that starts second.
