The Dirty Weekend Ahead – 28th and 29th of July

Its that time of the week again, the time to grab your Ogio gear bag out and get it loaded for a weekend of riding, or if your not riding this weekend its time to finalise your plans regarding which track you will be spectating at this weekend.

If you live anywhere near Appin in New South Wales round eight of the Monster Energy MX Nationals is in town for your viewing pleasure and it is shaping up to be a very important round championship wise across all three classes.

In the MX1 class, it is still a two way battle for the championship, however two riders in particular have built themselves a little bit of a lead over the rest of the field. CDR Yamaha rider Josh Coppins and Motul Pirelli Suzuki's Todd Waters are only separated by a handful of points heading into Appin.

Waters has closed in the points narrowly during the past few rounds and picked up the round win last time out in Horsham. Nothing separates Waters and Coppins on track and at any given time the next two riders in the championship standings, Brad Anderson and Lawson Bopping can strike and take a race or round win.

Adding to the interest in this class is the fact that riders who are probably a little to far back to challenge for the championship such as Cody Cooper, Jay Marmont, Jake Moss, Tye Simmonds and the returning Billy Mackenzie can also take a moto or round win at at any of the final few rounds and really throw a spanner I the championship contenders plans.
Styke has looked in control all season he will be looking to keep his form at his home state round this weekend - Credit: Aaryn Minerds
In the MX2 class things are still close, though Luke Styke has a 36 point lead heading to Appin and has seemed to be in control of the title for most of the season, Horsham showed that points can be pulled back in an instant even with a consistent day with finishes deep inside the top ten in every moto for the Serco Yamaha Metal Mulisha rider.

Carlton Dry Honda Thor Racing's Ford Dale is the rider sitting second in the standings with JDR/KTM's Josh Cachia sitting in third 53 points down. realistically they are probably the only three riders in contention for the 2012 title with three rounds left.

Behind Cachia sits Kade Mosig on 337 points for the season, though not completely out of race, at 84 points down he is well and truley a full round of perfect races results down on Styke, but then again this is motocross and anything can happen as they say.

Like the MX1 class, riders that look to be out of championship winning contention can have a big affect on the final outcome of the season, with riders such as Mosig, Adam Monea, Kirk Gibbs, Cheyne Boyd and a handful of others able to get between the top three riders in the points and make a difference to the final out come of the series.
Will Lamont hold the KTM MXD Charge to the end of the season - Credit: Aaryn Minerds
There is just about one thing we can count on in the MXD class, someone on a KTM will win this years championship! It is now just a question of, will it be the four stroke of Dylan Long, or one of the three, two strokes ridden by points leader Kayne Lamont along with Tasmanian Dylan Leary or facebook funny man Kale Make-a-ham sandwich.

Before news broke earlier this week of Sam Martin injuring his AC,L I would have also had him in the list of riders still able to win the championship and to be the rider to put a stop to KTM's domination, he is not completely out of contention but with a damaged ACL and no certainty to line up this weekend it is going to be tough for him.

Lamont is in the box seat and the in form rider in the MXD class and has pulled a nice little 29 point lead over Long after 6 rounds in the MXD championship. Leary sits third a further 31 points back fron Long and (Pardon the pun) is a bit of a Long shot to take the title, but again there is still a lot of racing left and anything can happen.

One thing to note is Joel Milesevic has moved up to the MX2 class from the MXD class in preparation for the world junior Championships which will be held the same time as the final round of the MX Nationals.

If Milesevic was able to complete all rounds in the MXD class, KTM would be on track to take the top five spots with four of the riders on 250 two strokes, not a bad effort for the orange brigade, and something for the two stroke fans to cheer about.
Josh Coppins will make an announcement on his future this weekend - Credit: Aaryn Minerds
One last not on this weekends round of MX National racing, Josh Coppins will be making an announcement on his future during the lunch break at Appin regarding his racing future, or his non racing future. It will be interesting to find out in which direction Coppins will be heading.

One thing is for sure, we will be hoping he stays involved with the sport in some capacity here in Australian, yes he is a Kiwi but he has a lot to offer future generations of riders both here and in his come country with the amount of racing experience he has had on the world stage.

Rounds 9 and 10 of the Australian Off Road Championship were also meant to be contested in Conondale, Qld this weekend but have been cancelled due to weather. The good news for MX fans is that some of the top riders from the AORC series will be in action at Appin, including the series points leader Toby Price.

On the International front it is a little quiet this weekend, the final round of the SPEA Trials World Championship will be held in Carlisle, United Kingdom this weekend, though the championship has already been wrapped up by Toni Bou.

With no AMA or World GP on this weekend lets turn the attention over to what is happening locally in your state.
