The Dirty Weekend Ahead – 1st and 2nd of September

Last weekend the two major Australian off road championships came to a close in the Monster Energy MX Nationals and the 2012 edition of the Australian Off Road Championship.

But major championships coming to an end does not mean there is still not plenty of racing action this weekend with a ton of racing going on around the world and at home around the states with a host of local races and ride days going on.

Over in Belgium the riders in the FIM World MX Championship will be getting in some good sand practice ready for the MXoN in a few weeks time. the 12th round of the 2012 World Championship heads to the sand of Lierop for round 14 of the 16 round series.

Both MX1 and MX2 Redbull KTM riders are in a position to clinch the title this weekend in Belgium, though the ask for both Antonio Cairoli in the MX1 class and Jeffery Herlings in the MX2 class is a big one, with both riders more likely to aim just to consolidate their points lead and be in a position to claim the championship at the penultimate round of the series next weekend in Faenza at the Gp of Europe. Cairoli heads into the 14th round with a 55 point lead over Clement Desalle, and would need Desalle to score zero points and then win both motos himself to secure another world championship. Christophe Pourcel sits third in the championship some 90 points behind Cairoli and will be looking to consolidate his third place in the series.

Herlings has a 51 point lead of British rider Tommy Searle and would also need Searle to score zero points while winning both motos himself to win the 2012 title. Jeremy van Horebeek sits in third 97 points behind Herlings and will mathematically drop out of the championship race if he loses more than three points to Herlings this weekend.

Over in the United States the Lucas Oils Pro Motocross Championship fires back into life after a small break. Ryan Dungey already owns the number one plate for the 450 class for the 2012 season and now all attention will move over to the 250 class with very the top four riders in the championship still in with a shot at this years championship.

Marvin Musquin despite his earning his first round win at the previous round at Unadilla is now out of the championship hunt, sitting exactly 100 points behind points leader Blake Bagget with two rounds of racing left.

Bagget leads the way on 436 points, 24 points clear of Justin Barcia and seemingly in control of the championship. But as we all know from the Australian Lites Championship nothing is certain until the chequered flag drops on the final moto of the year.

Sitting in third place is Eli Tomac a mere four points further back on his Geico Honda team mate and just 28 points down on Bagget with four motos to go. The fourth and final rider in contention for this years title is German rider Ken Roczen.

At 51 points down Roczen will need to make some big in roads this weekend, failing to score more points this weekend at Steel City would see Roczen mathematically unable to catch the Monster Energy kawasaki points leader Bagget and leave the three Americans to fight it out at the final round at Lake Elsinore the following weekend.

At this point in time the only Australian in action both internationally this weekend will be Jackson Richardson. JDR/KTM rider Josh Cachia is also state side but will wait until next weekends final round before he sees some racing action.

Meanwhile back home, Australia's best rock hoppers will be in action over in Western Australia this weekend when the 2012 Smarter than Smoking Australian Moto Trials Championship takes place at Pinjarra on the 1st and 2nd of September.
