Despite not winning a moto the USA has nailed an emphatic win at the 2006 Motocross of Nations, at Matterley Basin, England, last Sunday (Sep 24th). Whilst Team USA became the winningest country in Nations history, Belgian superstar Stefan Everts was the star of the weekend when he was the only duel winner of the day and bowed out of world class racing a winner.
James Stewart lead America with great maturity. Stewart took two seconds for the day behind Stefan Everts.
The 60th Edition of the Motocross of Nations, which played out in front of a massive 85,000 fans, will probably go down in history as one of the most exciting events ever run. With run away winners in both the America domestic series and European World Championship in Everts and Carmichael, the 2006 Motocross of Nations produced some of the closest and most exciting racing seen in a long time. Team USA was a model of fast consistency with only one rider finishing off the podium, Ivan Tedesco in the final Moto. With a seven point victory over Belgium the USA retain the Chamberlin Cup for the second year in a row. New Zealand scraped in as the final podium finishers with Cody Cooper making ground in the final moto to counteract a fall by Josh Coppins. The Australian team of Cheyne Boyd, Daniel Reardon and Brett Metcalfe finished a credible 11th overall. RACE 1 (MX2 & MX1)
It was Belgian Stefan Everts who walked away from race one a clear victor but it was The United States that drew first blood for the Nations title with James Stewart and a blisteringly fast MX2 rider Ryan Villopoto finishing second and third respectively. Everts carded the holeshot with Stewart hot on his heals but the American lost the front end half way through the opening lap and was relegated to sixth after having to re-start his bike.
Belgian superstar Stefan Everts bowed out of top level racing with two impressive wins for his country
"I just lost the front end, it was a little muddy and I couldn't really see in the shadows of the trees and just lost it," said Stewart. "From there I just wanted to get as good a finish as I could for the team." Villopoto inherited second after Stewarts fall and held the position until the closing laps when Stewart passed him after clawed his way back up through the field. After passing Kiwi Ben Townley for third Frenchman Christophe Pourcel threw a small challenge out to Villopoto but could never close the 2 second gap. In the end Everts rode away to an 11 second win but with his team-mate Kevin Strijbos (MX2) languishing in 11th the early lead would clearly go to America. As the points where tallied up it was America way out on front with 5 points followed by New Zealand on 11 after Townley and Coppins finished in 5th and 6th respectively and Belgium on 12 points. "It was a great race." said Everts. "I took a good start and I could control the race, it was great to get out in front and get the first moto win, I am very happy," he added. From an Australian standpoint Brett Metcalfe survived three crashes and made up a remarkable amount of ground after being down the back end of the field on the opening lap to finish 20th. Daniel Reardon was one place behind his team-mate in 21st. After getting off to a good start he admitted to suffering with a few nerves and saying tension crept into his riding a little bit. Australia sat in 11th overall after the moto.
American Ryan Villopoto (2) leads eventual winner in the MX2&MX3 race Antonio Cairoli. Cairoli was on fire in the moto and rode away from the field. Ben Townley (11) stayed in the picture with third
RACE 2 (MX2 + OPEN)
Race 2 turned out to be cracker and, surprisingly, the battle of the MX2 class after early leader and holeshot winner Ivan Tedesco (MX3) faded leaving Italian MX2 rider Antonio Cairoli to run away with victory. Behind Cairoli a war raged between the MX2 brigade with Ben Townley, Ryan Villopoto and Christophe Pourcel. Pourcel crossed up badly on a jump in the first half of the race and crashed leaving him out of the battle. This left Townley and Vilopoto continue their war. In the end Villopoto remained strong despite plowing into the trackside hay bales at one stage and almost bringing his day to an end then and there. Townley stayed solid until the end and only finished a bit over 3 seconds behind Villopoto in third. Belgian Steve Ramon was the hard charger of the race coming from way down the field to finish fourth. Unfortunately for Ramon his team-mate Kevin Strijbos, who had followed him through the field, crashed near the end and was only recorded as 33rd, thus killing any chances Belgium had at the title. The USA ended race 2 as tear away leaders on 13 points with New Zealand, on the back of Townley's 3rd and Cody Coopers' 17th the next best on 31 points and the Italians third on 34 points. Brett Metcalfe ran well early for the Aussies but struck trouble and ended the race in 25th, one place behind team-mate Cheyne Boyd. Australia still maintained 11th outright. RACE 3 (MX1 + OPEN)
With America so far out in font by the time the final race rolled around James Stewart and Ivan Tedesco would have had to packed up and headed to a strip club instead of racing to lose the 2006 Motocross of Nations for America, thus all the excitement was on the head to head battle between Everts and Stewart. Philippaerts exploded out of the gate with Brit Billy McKenzie and Josh Coppins in tow. Everts and Stewart where never far away tough and the duo made it through the intense battle after Coppins crashed and McKenzie and Philippaerts succumbed to the cracking pace. After that it became a pretty un-eventful race with Everts checking out and Stewart holding second to the flag. Team USA had done all it needed to take back to back Motocross of nations win's Stefan Everts was awarded the MX1 winners plate, Ryan Villopoto was awarded the MX2 plate and Steve Ramon the MX3 plate Results:
