Mark Avard (Suttos Husaberg Motorex) continued his wining streak with the overall at the second round of the S1 Supermotard title at the Wagga Wagga go-kart track on June 1. In trying conditions Avard‰Ûªs 1-1-2-2 allowed him to extend his championship lead to 27points from eventual runner-up, KTM mounted Graham Cheney (Kirkman MC, Orange KTM). ‰ÛÏThe rain was the horsepower equaliser from hell,‰Û

It was Avard who made the most of the sultry conditions powersliding his booming Husaberg into the lead from the outset. As the day wore on and the track dried the more familiar rear wheel slides returned as riders converted from full wet tyres to cut slicks around the short tricky circuit. Cheney (3-2-1-3 was a surprise packet revelling in the wet, using all his dirt track and motorcross experience to upstage his more fancied rivals. Stuart Bennett‰Ûªs (Motorex Metzeler) KTM was one of the widest bikes on the tarmac but some minor mistakes with tyre choice made it hard for him to stay in touch with the leading duo pushing him down the order.

Last years champion Greg Moss (2-DNF-3-1 Motorex KTM) was a welcome return to the field on the ultra exotic Factory SM520 after missing the first round. Moss pushed Avard all day but jumped starts in the first two motos forcing him to carve his way from the rear after a stop and go. After finally getting used to the lights, the fourth moto was all Moss as he powered to the easiest of victories. In the up to 450cc S2 class it was Steven Fisher (2-2-1-2 Honda CRF) displaced round one winner Mark Willis (3-3-2-1Noyes Honda Castrol) to third on the dais with Adam Altham (1-1-4-3Team Subway Yamaha) in second. Willis struggled to get the power to the ground on his trusty CRF450 electing to run cut road tyres than the more fancied wet weather specials that his opposition were running. But the gamble didn‰Ûªt pay off for the Queenslander as Fisher made a meal of the slippery conditions getting the jump out of the turns. Altham‰Ûªs gutsy fourth in the third was all the more commendable after he lost his front brake lever with four laps to go after tangling with Fisher. Mister consistency Willis was satisfied in the end having his title lead reduced by only two points. ‰ÛÏSometimes going absolutely stupid on a wet track can lose you a championship.‰Û
