The Bob Greenwood Memorial is named after
Bob Greenwood who was a super volunteer who built the ACT's first Motocross track
"Bob was A mountain of a man with a big heart, he set a great example to us by putting 100% plus effort into the sport he loved, for the benefit of all"
"Bob was a quarry owner from Sydney, and a member of both of our predecessors; The Mini Bike and Cycle Club of Canberra, and the Motorcycle Club of Canberra."
"In the 70's and 80's junior motorcyclists were forbidden to race in NSW, so the ACT became the hub of junior dirt bike racing. The Mini Bike Club had a short circuit track at Fairbairn Park, and Bob built the first motocross track there, so kids like Wayne Gardiner, Matt Mladin, the Gobert brothers, and his son and daughter, Jamie and Tiffany Greenwood, could hone their skills at racing both disciplines on alternate weekends."
"Old hands say that Bob travelled down from Sydney with his kids and a trailer load of spare bikes. They say he worked tirelessly for the Club, often jumping on a machine to prepare the tracks for racing, and if a kid's bike broke down, he would say "Here, take one of mine".
"He always made sure that no kid missed out on a ride. And in his spare time, he rode a dirt track sidecar!"
"Tragically, Bob was injured in an industrial accident at his quarry, and consequently died from a heart attack". He is sadly missed, but fondly remembered by his wife and kids, Club mates, and those who knew him"
"Since then the Club has held an annual "Ironman" event to honour Bob's life, his friendship and the contribution that he made to our Club and to our sport. It's always our biggest day of the year, and a day to thank the hard working volunteers who have kept Bob Greenwood's dream alive, by doing whatever they can to make sure "every kid get's a ride".
There's more than 30 races on the program, including the All Powers Feature Races, and there's classes to suit all ages, with 50cc Nippers, 65cc, 85cc, 125cc, 150cc and 250cc juniors, and senior's Lites, Open, Women, Over 35's, Over 45's and Old Bikes.
The action is fast and furious; each race is a 4 lap sprint, and all starting sequentially as the previous ones cross the finish line.
Trophies will be presented to the leading riders during presentation at the Canteen afterwards.
Gates open to the public at 9am, racing starts at 10am and runs through till @4pm.
Spectator entry is free for members, and only $5 per person, or $10 per carload for non-members, with 50% of proceeds going to the Lions Club.
