Successful start for New South Wales Yamaha Junior Racing team

Posted:

The NSW Junior Motocross Championships kicked off over Easter weekend with round one at Cessnock, in the Hunter valley region of NSW. The weather cooperated, offering up perfect riding conditions for the event.

Newcomer to the team, 15 year old Dylan Heaton, had an impressive debut with the YJR at Cessnock showing the maturity and speed on track that has helped him become a very successful junior racer.

Saturday saw Heaton line up on his YZ 125 in the 15yrs 125cc class. He began the first of three 15min motos with a massive holeshot and continued the strong form with 1-1-3 moto finishes claiming the overall win in that class.

Sunday saw Heaton switch bikes to his YZ 250F and was determined to pick up where he left off the day before. In moto one an average start left him just outside the top ten on lap one and meant he had to work hard during the race.

Heaton made it through to second place and closed the gap on race leader but was unable to make a pass and finished second.

Capitalising on a second place start in moto two and a holeshot in the final race, Dylan earned the overall victory and ended a great start to the series.

‰ÛÏEverything went well this weekend; I had good starts and felt good on the bike across the two days. I‰Ûªll just keep working hard and I look forward to the rest of this year with YJR,‰Û

Long time YJR member Brendon Walther had an exceptional return from injury at Cessnock. This was his first major race since the Australian Junior Motocross Championships at Coolum in October last year and it was hard to tell he had been off the bike for the best part of five months.

He was up on his YZ 125 first and showed some solid pace and improved with every moto as his confidence returned. He eventually finished the day fifth overall, a great result all things considered.

On Sunday Walther lined up on his YZ 85 and after setting the quickest qualifying time he felt confident. Race one didn‰Ûªt quite go to plan though and a bad start followed by a small crash resulted in a 7th place finish.

He turned that around though with better starts and some determined riding to the front winning the following two motos and salvaging the overall win for the day.

‰ÛÏIt was good to be back racing after my injury." Walther stated. "I was confident I could do well this weekend but to win the 85 was awesome.

"I just needed to build a little confidence in my starts and racing again but by the end of the weekend that all felt back to normal.

"I‰Ûªm looking forward to the next round at Dubbo," he added.

NSW YJR team manager Shane Booth was impressed with the weekends racing.

‰ÛÏIt was such a great weekend, both Brendon and Dylan rode so well and I‰Ûªm happy for them more than anything," commented Booth. "They both put in such a big effort along with their families and it really is great to see it pay off for them.

"We‰Ûªre looking forward to great year," he concluded.
