Over 20,000 fans turned out over the weekend to see defending World Motocross Champion Stefan Everts (L&M Yamaha) continued his record breaking win streak when the seven time champion took a narrow one point overall win over arch rival Mickael Pichon at Zolder in Belgium last Sunday, April 3rd.

Everts' win - the 80th of his career - came via victory in the opening moto and a third in the second, whilst Pichon racked up a pair of second places for his second place overall finish. Race two winner Joel Smets took the final spot on the podium after a fifth in the first moto to complete a much anticipated come back from injury. "I felt strong in the first heat and I was able to control my race even after a bad start", said Everts. "I found a couple of really good lines around the track, but near the end of the race I felt that I had to dig really deep to come back". "This was probably the reason why I lacked the energy and power to push in the second race. I got stuck in fourth behind Barragan and only until I found some good lines at the back of the track I was able to make a pass on him. Obviously I'm happy with the end result today and hopefully I can still improve on my condition as the season goes on." he added. Pichon was a little disappointed with his opening moto, after getting out of the gate well and overcoming holeshot winner Kevin Strijbos, the world number 2 began to fall back into the clutches of the field after a few laps whilst his main rival Everts made a charge through the field to the front from a mid pack start.

"We only had the factory suspension from Japan two weeks ago and that hasn't left us with much time for testing and coming to tracks like this without preparation doesn‰Ûªt make an easy race. After five laps my arms pumped up really bad and my times dropped, at one point I was almost thinking about stopping. It was so dangerous because I could not hold the bike. I did the best I could do" Pichon stated. The second moto saw a small improvement for Pichon but Suzuki's Joel Smets had let it be know tat he was far from a spent force as the Veteran Belgian showed the field the way in front of his hometown fans. "Joel pushed really hard in the first laps and after a while I was starting to catch him and I wanted to put some pressure but then I made a few mistakes and could not get close. With around five minutes left I slowed down a little because I did not want to crash", said Pichon "The track was physically very demanding. I feel that two second positions here in Belgium is a very good result." For Smets day could have been a little better finishing position wise had it not been for a small crash with Josh Coppins in the opening moto, but It could not have been any better from a personal comeback perspective. "This is unbelievable". beamed the 5 time world champion "I cannot explain my feelings. After spending days in intensive care and with all the pain in my knee, leading this race for 40 minutes on a very physical track reminds me of all the work I have put in and why I get up every day to do some more. I can usually talk from morning to night but right now I can't think of anything to say. This is one of the happiest days of my life. After all that has happened in the last year, this is like winning my first GP."
MX2 winner Tyla Rattray could very well drop a number from his plate by years end. Photo: Ray Archer
Following the established stars home in fourth was MX2 debutant Kiwi Ben Townley who announced to the world in no uncertain terms that the 2004 MX2 world champion wants to add an MX1 championship to his mantle before heading stateside. After slicing through the field following a bad start for third in the opening moto, the 19-year-old found the going a bit tougher in the second when he had to fight from a mid-pack start, his final position of fifth giving the personality loaded youngster a creditable 4th overall in his first outing. " My goal was to finish top five this weekend but after the first race result I think I should have finished on the podium. The second heat was physically demanding for everyone but I probably should have waited in the first and kept myself for the second heat,‰Û
L&M Yamaha's Cedric Melotte had a tough day according to him, but a pair of seconds and second overall in the MX2 class only leaves one more spot to gain. Photo: Yamaha
