The 2007 South Australian off Road Championship round 1 was held at Clare, in the State's Mid North Sunday 29th April.
With the amount of rain in the area in the days leading up to the event, 100mm of rain fell between Thursday and Sunday, the riders knew it was going to be a great event with no dust for a change. The riders were provided with a challenging course consisting of loamy grass hills with a flowing high speed grass track, mx track, and technical sections through the trees and not to mention the mud holes that formed through out the day.
The event was to be three hour cross country, but after a downpour at about half distance the organisers made the decision to reduce the event to two hours.
Shane Diener now riding on 4 strokes, after years on 2 strokes, started the year off with a win on his SA Dirt Bikes Kawasaki KXF450, leading from start to finish. Shane was very happy to be riding a Kawasaki stating bike was faultless all day.
With all riders riding slightly on the cautionary side of thing to get use to the wet conditions, it was easy to see who had put the hard yards in the off season, as the riders confidence picked after the first 2 laps. After the down pour riders were informed by organisers at their fuel stops that the race was to be cut to 2 hours. There was some disappointed, but it had to be done as the course was really starting to rip up and huge bike swallow mud holes keeping the officials very busy.
Diener finished the day where he started out in front followed by,
Trent Long, also riding a Kawasaki KXF 450 and then
Rowan Pumpa on a Husqvarna WR250.
The Trio made the hard look easy all day but that wont be the same case come next round, as everyone in now back in training and wanting to win. It's going to be a great series this year with
Gerry Jongebloed putting in a huge effect in getting the series up and running in a very professional way, which is great to see for the sport.
The next 2 rounds are June 3rd at Tintinara and round 3 being at Crystal Brook 23rd of June. For more information contact your local motorbike shop or motorcycling S.A.
