Coming out on top in the premier S2 class over both rounds was in-form KTM rider Angus Reekie, who despite competition from the likes of Craig Anderson and current championship leader Rodney Taplin, took all before him over the weekend by taking all of the race wins despite being upstaged throughout the early qualifying events.
Anderson was looking like the one to beat when he took out the Super-pole and started from the number one spot on the grid. This was to be short lived with the Supercross and Motocross champion getting a front flat tyre on the warm-up lap and had to sit the race out, and unfortunately for the Axis Honda team, Rodney Taplin, also faced the same fate getting a flat tyre at half race distance. However, Taplin managed to salvage some points by finishing the opening race. He came on strong in race two and charged to the front to challenge Reekie all the way to the finish line. Linden Magee showed some great pace on his new KXF 450cc by finishing second in race one, but unfortunately his success was short lived as a crash in race two saw him drop down in the points.
In the second round of the ‰Û÷S2‰Ûª class it was Reekie that defeated Stuart Bennett and Nick Brain, whilst the next round saw Reekie down a hard charging Craig Anderson and Bennett. Anderson and Bennett had a race long duel swapping second place several times. This was a hard luck weekend for the two of the championship front runners, championship leader heading into the round, Rodney Taplin, finished well down the order over both rounds back in sixth place.
Reekie continued his winning ways by taking out the ‰Û÷S1‰Ûª class in round two ahead of Josh McFarlane and Graham Cheney, but it was a different story in the third round on Sunday when Reekie suffered a flat tyre in the opening race and failed to finish, which handed the overall round victory to Cheney, who outpaced David Gellatly. Gellatly dedicated his podium place to his father who was recently tragically killed in a road accident, a great ride from the Western Australian and finishing in third place was Aprilia Racing rider Josh McFarlane.
There was no stopping Cry Halliday over the weekend in the ‰Û÷S3‰Ûª class as he managed to remain undefeated in both rounds, but was kept honest by the likes of Jake Magee, Nathan Porombka and Danny Anderson, who all filled the minor placing‰Ûªs on the podium at one stage over the weekend.
The likes of Phil Lovett (Veterans), Rebecca Bateman (Women‰Ûªs), Cody Jurd (Novice) and Ben McInnes (Juniors) took duel round wins in their respective classes, whilst Kym Gross and Zach Thackeray shared wins in the Clubman X class. In the Quad class, which only appeared on the Saturday, it was Miles Tauber that claimed the overall victory for the class.
Promoter of the SsangYong Australian Supermoto Championship, Mark Avard, was thrilled with the weekend overall.
‰ÛÏIt was a fantastic weekend where the solid crowds were kept entertained with some of the best Supermoto racing ever seen here in Australia, and to have Moto-X greats like Ando mixing it up with our top Supermoto specialist is great to see. We expect to see more top racing at the final 3 rounds of the Championship‰Û
