Roczen happy with his first taste of AMA Supercross

Red Bull/KTM Factory Team rider Ken Roczen gave the sold out crowd a proper introduction right from the gate at the opening round of the 2011 AMA Monster Energy Supercross Lites Series in Anaheim, California, earning the fastest qualifying lap time.

The World Moto GP star turned heads immediately upon entering the track in the first practice session. The German wunderkind's unique style grabbed the attention of fans across the stadium as the 16-year-old quickly moved up the lap time tower to the top spot earning the highest qualifying position in his second session.

A few laps into his final practice session Roczen was involved in a crash with another rider which resulted in a badly bruised quad and forearm. He had to forfeit the remainder of practice to seek help from the medics. Roczen rested up before the heats and returned to action.

Despite missing the final practice, Roczen still held the top qualifying position and was rewarded first gate pick in the second Lites heat for his efforts. He had a bad jump off the gate but that was the only negative about his heat. He rounded turn one in 15th and quickly jumped to 12th and soon into the top ten by the end of the first lap. The crowd was on their feet watching Roczen fly by one or more riders per lap to eventually put his KTM into a good 4th place qualifying position.

Roczen tried his best to rest between his heat and the main event. "It is my first time riding at this time of night and with my earlier crash I was feeling pretty tired heading to the main. It made me tighten up which hurt me off the start and in the first few laps," remarked Roczen.

In the main event, the young German started near the tail end of the pack and rounded the first turn around 15th. he jumped past a handful of riders and into 10th position within the first few turns. The next lap he moved into 9th and soon was sitting behind Nick Paluzzi. His fast lap times helped him quickly close the gap to Paluzzi making the pass right before the finish line on the fourth lap. A few turns later Roczen made a mistake and washed out in a turn. He recovered after losing two positions.

Another lap and he had passed back into 8th and again had Paluzzi in his sights. He spent two more laps reeling him in and then made the pass stick around the halfway point. He began to close on Ryan Morais near the end of the moto but fell short on time. He ended his first race in a respectable 7th. A great finish for a rookie in his first Supercross race.

"I did have higher expectations coming into this race. I felt that I should have been within the top five. Reflecting back, I am still satisfied with my result because I am safe and able to return for Phoenix. I will use this race as motivation during the week to train harder and work toward a finish within the top five," stated Roczen.

In teh open class Red Bull KTM Factory Team rider Andrew Short earned a decent score at the opening round with a 10th place result. His teammate, Mike Alessi finished a few positions back in 14th. However, the most impressive part of the night will be the KTM 350 SX-F which debuted in it's first-ever AMA Supercross competition with both factory riders easily qualifying into the main.

Consistency was the word of the day for Short as he qualified 10th fastest in both of his timed practice sessions and ended his evening with a 10th place result in the main.

Both Short and Alessi were placed into the second heat of the SX class. Short started 7th around the first corner with Alessi back in 11th. Short maintained his pace throughout the eight lap heat and remained in 7th to easily qualify into the main event. Alessi picked up his pace in order to secure a few more spots working toward the 9th place final qualifying spot. That spot happened to be held by his brother Jeff Alessi. After following his brother for a few laps Alessi was able to make the pass for the final transfer spot on the last lap. "I had to make an aggressive pass on my brother to get into the main event, but that's part of racing," remarked Alessi.

When the gate dropped for the main event it was Alessi up front early. Alessi rounded the first turn in 3rd position. Short did not have as good of a jump but still managed a top ten start rounding the first turn in 9th place. After a few battles within the first lap Alessi had dropped back to 7th and Short to 10th. "I didn't have the pace of the top few guys tonight and I fell back quite a few positions from my good start," stated Alessi.

Alessi continued to hold off hard-charging riders for the first half of the race before he fell further off the pace. "I need to work on my fitness and prepare myself for longer races. I just returned from Australia where we were racing 5 to 6 lap mains and my conditioning is not where it needs to be to run inside the top ten." Alessi eventually finished 14th overall.

Short dropped as low as 12th early in the race after a few mistakes but kept it together and continued to charge forward. On the fourth lap, Short passed his teammate Alessi to regain 10th and began to look ahead. He spent the remaining laps of the race closing in on the 9th place ride of Josh Grant but was unable to gain the position before the checkered flag.

"I struggled tonight. I felt off earlier in the day and wasn't able to get to a point where I was riding where I knew I could. I am just glad to get the first round out of the way and am looking forward to an improved result in Phoenix," recapped Short.
Mike Alessi finished 14th on the KTM-350SXF Supercross debut
