The six round Ssangyong Australian Supermoto Championship kicks off this weekend at Sydney's Eastern Creek Karting Complex and all the big names will be back in 2006 to try and take the top honors in Australian Supermoto racing's pinnacle.

For round one, Eastern Creek Karting track will be transformed into a playground of table tops, berms and step ups as Australia's finest battle it out on a circuit made up of 220m of dirt and 980m of asphalt Yamaha will once again be represented by Subway racing's Adam Altham and brothers Mark and Mick Avard. Altham has battled with injury for the previous two seasons but comes into round one fit and ready, whilst Mark Avard - who is also the series promoter - is always a front runner and could very well be on the top step off the podium at the end of the day. Yamaha will be missing Shannon Johnston as the 2004 S2 champion has now moved onto Team Kawasaki and unfortunately his commitments to his road racing schedule will not allow him to commit the championship. Johnston's new Kawasaki team-mate Josh Waters is also caught in the same dilemma. This leaves Kawasaki as the only manufacturer without any top line presence in the 2006 championship. Team KTM Motorex is settled and runner up in S2 in 2005 and 2004, Stuart Bennett a veteran of Australian off road racing is back again to try to take that coveted number one plate. Graham Cheney, cursed by injury mid season is fighting fit and out to earn his ride and to show his team‰Ûªs boss that he is worthy, Cheney is one of the most spectacular riders in the field. KTM will have the addition Motocross and Supercross gun Daniel McCoy on KTM's new light weight weapon the SXF250 in the S3 class. After losing 2005 Champion Glen Allerton to the Joe Rocket Honda road racing team for 2006. Team Motul Suzuki will again front the starter with last years championship winning bike and will put its efforts into American Cassidy Anderson, the RMZ450 proved itself to be a potent weapon and we can expect Anderson to be a podium contender. Cassidy placed on the podium 3 times in the massive USA series, Red Bull AMA Supermoto, finishing an impressive 5th overall for his 1st Pro year.

Team Honda has employed the talents Enduro/Off road and dirt track star Ben Grabham who will be looking to repeat the form of his sensational debut in 2005. Australian Safari Class winner Jamie Cunningham will also be making a full tilt effort to claim S2 honors. The GHR Honda Racing team is being run by Desert racing expert Glenn Hoffman, the team is planning big results in this years Championship. Team Axis Motorsports Rodney Taplin will also be one to watch in the S2 class, with some great speed and experience as well. Team Husqvarna is putting its eggs all in one basket in the Premier S2 450cc Class with Troy Herfoss leading the charge. Herfoss comes into the opening round under a cloud as the young gun is still not 100% fit after breaking his arm in final round of the 2005 championship. Herfoss was clearly the fastest Supermoto rider in Australia during the 2005 season and proved one of the fastest in the world as he ran up the front in the AMA Series. It was only a cruel blow at the final round of last years championship that cost him the crown after he lead right up until he broke his arm. With six rounds to be competed Herfoss may start out slow but as he gains fitness he will soon be mixing it up at the front of the pack. Husqvarna will also have Queensland motocross star Adam Cini and female racer Rebecca Bateman aboard as they take time out from their Motocross commitments to also compete for Husky in the S1 and the Women‰Ûªs class respectively. Aprilia will be throwing everything into their debut season and may very well surprise many with the talents of reigning S1 champion Josh McFarlane and young gun Jake Magee. The Kevin Magee lead team will be hoping to emulate the success of their world championship counterparts who where always front runners in 2005. The 2006 Championship promises to bring the racing to the people and with open pits, autograph sessions and plenty of off track entertainment for the kids it will be worth grabbing a spot track side to see Australia's best slug it out.
