Reekie Dominates Queensland Leg of Ssangyong Australian Supermoto Championship

Posted:

As has been the case so far this year in the Ssangyong Australian Supermoto Championship, KTM rider Angus Reekie managed to score duel wins in the premier 'S2' class during rounds fourth and five of the championship that was played out over the weekend (November 10 and 11) at Ipswich Kart Raceway in Queensland. In the process of a clean sweep of the premier 'S2' class Reekie wrapped up the championship point standings with a round remaining, after being too strong for Queenslander Linden Magee and opening round victor Rodney Taplin. On the Saturday it was Reekie that claimed the round honours with duel wins finishing ahead of Magee and Taplin, and the following day for round five Reekie defeated Taplin. Taplin had to beat Reekie in the final Moto to keep his championship chances alive, matching Reekie's lap times most of the race, however a faultless Reekie did not put a wheel wrong all race, with Linden Magee also had a great race showing the Kawasaki KXF450cc is right up with the pace of the Honda's and KTM's rounding out the top three. Cru Halliday also found some great speed on the Hog's Breath Yamaha, having some great battles with Husky racing Stuart Bennett and Alex Gobert on the Aprilia to take out the minor places. "I had a good run in the 'S2' class and never put a foot wrong and was not only rewarded with the duel round wins but also the Australian Championship which is wonderful achievement as I wanted to improve my results from last year [of third place in the 'S1' class]," Reekie expressed. Reekie also proved too strong around the 1.14km Ipswich Kart Raceway circuit in the 'S1' class, but it wasn't a cake walk. In Saturday's competition Reekie had his clean sweep of the round, after winning race one and then later race three, swept away from him when he suffered a fall in the second race but still managed to recover and finish in second place behind Graham Cheney. The following day Reekie made up from his second race mistake the day before to romp to victory lane by taking out all three races, this time finishing ahead of Josh McFarlane and Cheney. David Gellatly and new Rising Sun Honda rider Ross Taylor had some great battles to round out the top five. This class still comes down to the last round with Reekie, Cheney and Macfarlane all still able to take out the title, but it is Reekie in the box seat. Cru Halliday was in fine form over the course of the weekend in the 'S3' class by taking both round victories, with stiff competition coming from the likes of Jake Magee and Joel Whittaker, who frequented the podium behind Halliday over the weekend. Halliday now has a handy lead in the championship, however the S3 class will also come down to the final round in Melbourne. The Women's class saw the consistency reward Gina Cleaver with the round win on Saturday ahead defending champion Rebecca Bateman and Rachael Eagle. Bateman failed to finish the opening race, but managed to record wins in both race two and three. The next day for the fifth round Bateman bounced back into the winner's circle by taking out all three races and defeating Cleaver and Eagle overall for the round. Phill Lovett was far too strong for his rivals in the veteran class by taking out both round wins, while Steve Mann and Kyle O'Brien shared round wins in the Novice class, as did Gary Kasch and Greg Timmins in Clubman X, while double round wins were Allen Foreman (Juniors), and Gold Coast based Matt 'Kangaroo Kid' Coulter took out the Quads.
