On the 22nd and 23rd of April, 400 riders arrived at the Lang Park Complex in Townsville to begin the first round of the Queensland Yamaha Motocross Titles. Little did they know that one young man would end up in hospital, fighting for his life.
Bullet Bikes/Yamaha team rider, Jamie Bain, had made a great start to the championships finishing 11th and 6th in the first two motos. The last race seen Jamie make a top ten start in the fiercely competitive, Pro Lites class, only to come down over a jump with numerous other riders going down around him.
This seen Jamie end up in hospital in a coma and he was in this coma until Wednesday the 26th March with a brain bleed and swelling. The whole of the motocross community was on edge, waiting for news on this talented young rider. In a short space of just three weeks, Jamie has made a rapid recovery and has beat the odds, gaining all his memory back up until Sunday morning of the accident and has successfully learnt to walk and talk again.
The only other injuries he sustained were a dislocated jaw, which was immediately put into place and some damaged cartilage in his right knee. Currently, Jamie is completing an intensive rehabilitation program in the Townsville Hospital to ensure he is fit and well to head back to his hometown. Jamie is in high spirits and is extremely keen to get out of the hospital and, while he hopes to be out this time next week, it may be a little longer.
Before the accident, Jamie was training on and off the bike daily in order to be fully prepared for the start of the National U19 Motocross Series. Jamie was set to be one of the non-factory backed riders in the series, with a huge chance of taking out the title. His fitness and speed were exceptional and his style and consistency on the bike made him one to watch at the pointy end of the field in each meeting he attended.
His dedication to the sport and to his training has been remarkable up until this point. The accident has been a setback in his career but will only motivate Jamie to regain his fitness and to get back onto his bikes to be stronger and better than ever. Keep an eye out for # 06‰ÛÒ he is a special talent.
