Pat Bowden takes Jetpilot/Metal Mulisha Round 3 Corryong Classic

Posted:

Pat Bowden claimed his first win of his FMX career and beating home town hero and championship points leader, Rhys Hillier for the top spot on the podium at the Jetpilot/Metal Mulisha Corryong Classic in Victoria last weekend.

The Victorian rain cleared just in time to for the third round of the Australian Underground FMX Championship and what greeted the riders was a beautiful sunny, windless day and an immaculate Greg Hillier prepared FMX course.

Practice got underway on time and it was clear from the get go that everyone had been putting in the hard yards between rounds. Rhys Hillier, Pat Bowden and Luke Mcneill got the usual flip show on the road and it was expected that the trio that had been battling all series long would have a tight fight between them. That was until Liquid Malisha's Joel Brown showed that he was going to throw his hat in the ring and went on to throw his first 75ft flips in competition.

As the heats went down it also became clear the flip guys weren't going to have it all their own way. WRD's Luke Saunders was back with a vengeance after his 7th place at round 2. Luke was throwing down his trademark silky smooth style on all his tricks and showing that flips aren't everything.

Other stand outs included RFDmx/Tiger Racing's Tom Robinson, the young 18 year old didn't miss a trick and had perfect extension on all his tricks, not to mention one of the biggest classic "windham" style whips that anyone on hand had ever seen and would go on to win the Balnaves Images Trick of the Day for his efforts. Flightpath rider Matt Smith kept his consistent riding on a roll incorporating big off the bar tricks and use of the course to see him comfortably into the semi's. The dark horse of the event, Brenton Drager, rounded out the riders for the semi final with smooth clean tricks and one hell of a big double nac indy.
Joel Brown fly's around the immaculate Greg Hillier prepared FMX course.
All eight riders didn't leave anything in the trick bag in the semi's and after the dust settled no one was envying the judges. In the end the four flippers, Hillier, Bowden, McNeill and Brown would edge out the right way up guys for the four finals berths.

The pressure was clearly on come finals time with every rider making mistakes in their runs. But it would be SRH's Pat Bowden who took the honors and put a stop Hilliers home town undefeated streak. Pat put together a solid run with heelclicker flips, inside out turndowns and solid right way up tricks.

Second place finisher RFDmx/Tiger Racing's Rhys Hillier said "I made a few mistakes out there and forgot to do my whip, but big props to Pat he deserved it."

Jetpilots Luke McNeill rounded out the podium in a close fight with RFDmx/Tiger Racing's Joel Brown. Luke's flip tricks where probably the best of anyone's all day including cordova flips, whip flips and super flips. Contrasted by Browns spectacular right way up tricks like no hand catty's, rock solid indy's and past vert rulers.

The bubbly was popped and the celebratory beers flowed after another successful round of the series.

Huge thanks must go out the Hillier family Greg, Pauline, Rhys and the girls for their always amazing hospitality and support. Also to the Round 3 major sponsors Jetpilot and Metal Mulisha, the judges and flaggies all the series sponsors and everyone involved in putting the weekend together.
