The Pukekohe Motorcycle Club were hosts to Round 1 at their 48 acre MR Motorcycles Harrisville Track which is 50 minutes south of Auckland City. Round 2 is at Foxton (lower NI) - a sand track, at the end of February.
The Harrisville track was described by Darryl King as one of the top three in the world. Featuring a moderately steep terrain the track is basically split into two parts - one up hill & down dale and a 'supercross' section with some very challenging jumps. The track had been ripped and the heavy loam well watered. Due credit for the superb condition was given to the Club by commentator Neil Ritchie especially to the track's 'manager' Doug Smith. As each day progressed the hardpack was revealed and at the end of each hot day was starting to dust up. The drying out process was aided by not only the sunny days but and a mild southerly on Sunday. Great conditions for summer motocross. With 180 entries over 6 Classes the Championship was also a trial for the 8-11 Years 65cc Class but there were only 17 entries. Too daunting a track ? maybe but it did not bother the front runners who were clearing the big double at the bottom and the tabletop up to the finish line - something not a lot of the 85's do !! Saturday belonged to visiting Welsh 'wizard' Rickie Roderick (KTM) with two wins by an average 13 seconds but Sunday was the domain of current NZ Champ Hadleigh Knight (KTM - Atiamuri -in the middle of the North Island) with three wins. Knight's advantage was 11. 8 and 5 seconds and finished on 119 points and Roderick 116. Third place in every race went to Garth Amrein (KX - Katikati - near Tauranga) but he was between 24 and 50 seconds behind.
With four wins and a second the 12-14 125cc Class belonged to the very talented Matt Hunt. Photo: Alan Henderson
In the 85cc Class there is no small wheel / big wheel separation under MNZ rules and there are 3 Classes 8-10 years, 11-12 and 13-16. 8-10 85cc.
Won by another Atiamuri's Dion Picard (KTM) some 9 points clear of Fielding's Haki Waller (KX) who was only 1 point ahead of Ryan Knight (KTM) - yes, from Atiamuri. Chase Smith (KTM - Kumeu) was 2nd in R1 was clear leader in R2 when he crashed off a rut at the bottom of the supercross section and the footpeg left a nasty hole in his thigh. His bestmate Brandon Tipene (KTM - Dairy Flat) won that race but could not make the podium with two subsequent 4th's and a 4th overall.

11-12 85cc.
Lots of talent in this class and with a wee bit of a shuffle there was a full 40 grid so qualifying was not required. Only one rider won two races and the top 10 was a constant shuffle. The round was won by Kayne Lamont (YZ - Mangakino) by only 2 points over Tom Managh (CR - Wanganui). In 3rd was Scott McKinstry (CR - Taupo). 4th place was to Bjarn Frederiksen (CR - Masterton) who actually won races R2 & R3 but did not earn enough points in the other races to earn a podium.

13-16 85cc.
It looked like the talented Henry Madams (KTM - Wellington) who was also riding the 125cc Class, would take the Round after three consecutive wins with Hamish Dobbyn (YZ - Warkworth) in 2nd place but hey, this is motocross. R4 went to Dobbyn with Madams third. In R5 Madams crashed out of view and his father attempted to straighten the forks to no avail and for Madams it was race over.

Not taking the kudos away from Dobbyn who won the race and accumulated 116 points over Madams on 95. 3rd to 5th had been trading places all weekend but Kieran Scheele (KTM - Otane in Hawkes Bay) also had 95 points. 4th was Michael Wade (KX - Warkworth) on 92 points with Kieran Leigh (YZ - Cambridge) only 4 points back on 88. Unfortunately for Dobbyn he won't contest Round 2 as he will be riding for Yamaha Victoria's Junior Development Squad in the Australian Championships. It should also be mentioned that missing from the event was Cameron Dillon (CR - Mangakino) who would have figured in the results had he been there - but he wasn't. Great to see seven girls running in this Class - 6 of them in the mid field.

12-14 125cc.
Couple of riders generously moved up to the next Class so again there was a full 40 grid and qualifying was not required. With four wins and a second the Class belonged to the very talented Matt Hunt (YZ - Gisborne) on 122 points. The 2nd place came about with a bent gear change and he was stuck in third gear !! That race went to Henry Madams (KTM - Wellington) and with his four 2nds had 113 points. Back in 3rd was Matthew Prumm (KTM - Bombay - South Auckland) Matthew is brother of Katherine Prumm and as I type this I am told Matthew had a practice crash last night and seriously smashed his elbow. 4th on 92 was Tim Coleman (CR - Marton). Back on 68 points was Ethan Martens (YZ - Waitakere West Auckland) who is normally up higher but crashed out in R3.

Good to see Shey Cooksley (YZ - Ramarama - South Auckland) crack the top 10 with an 8th place. Shey is the son of Vet racer Tony Cooksley who is still very competitive in the Open Class.

15-16 125cc.
The Round belonged to Brad Groombridge (KX - Taupo) some 23 points clear of Jayden Jessup (YZ - Porirua - Wellington) on 92. 3rd on 86 was Shane Tunnicliffe (YZ - Morrinsville ) Hayden Clark on 84 and Cole Brooks on 83. Cole has just returned from Australia and was showing great form with four thirds but an 18th in R3 spoilt his weekend. Jesse Donnelly, Michael Menchi (won R3 by 10 seconds !) and Mason Wilkie were down at 8, 9 & 10 respectively due to a mix of good and bad. Missing from the Class was Lee McKinstry who is nursing a broken radius and collarbone.
