The Motorex 2008 WA Motocross Championships kicked off at AJS Motorcycle Club Sunday 20th April, the Host club for Round 5 of the Rockstar Energy Nationals on June 1st. Record entries in some classes took the field for the day over 260 and the pits were filled to capacity. New series sponsors Motorex and Smarter than Smoking signage adorned the circuit with other major sponsors M2R, Fly, TCX, Maxxis and the Honda Shop on board for the series. Race teams and sponsored riders added plenty of spectacle and colour to the pits and come 8.15am it was time for the first riders meeting of the year. The first 3 riders that walked up for the riders meeting were lucky enough to walk away with $25 fuel vouchers and with 7 Transponders to giveaway to lucky series entrants, Ryan Cooper was the first Transponder winner, with a $50 refund coming his way as he wont have to hire a transponder for the next few years ! Practice ran smoothly with everyone chomping at the bit to get the first race done and dusted. Pro Lite riders were the first to race for Championship points, Louis Calvin showed his hand of what it was going to take to win, he put a 51 second lead on Jake Watling who came in second, and 58 seconds on Daniel Woodward in 3rd, Shane Murray came unstuck in lap 4 and battled back from 19th into 10th position. Race 2 for the Pro Lites is a 6 Lap Sprint race, exciting to watch where no mistakes can be made. Calvin again took the lead and left the field to battle it out for the minor placings. 2007 Champ Paul Humberston 2nd and Shane Murray 3rd. Race 3 saw the same podium finishers, noting only 9 of the Pro Lite field finished the entire 9 laps. Pro Open Championship had a mammoth field of talent on the grid, with eager race teams not only vying for the best place on the grid, but the best place in the pit board area, Dean Porter back from a long break after shoulder surgery opened up a good lead in race 1 only to pull into the mechanic are with 12 spokes missing from his back wheel, unfortunately Dean would score a DNF for his first State round race for the season, team mate Ben Hothersall was working his way through the traffic up into 3rd place, Calvin 22 seconds in front in second and #1 WA Plate Holder Michael Addison was back in the pits almost å_ a lap in front of the rest of the field in 1st place. Race 2 was also a 6 lap sprint race for the Pro Open field, Porter, Addison and Calvin exchanged the lead throughout the race, taking advantage of any mistake, first it was Addison to be overtaken by both Porter and Calvin, then Calvin hit the front, Addison pushed back through into 1st, with Porter now in second and Calvin back to third, through the quarry for the last time, Porter was making up ground and closing in on Addison, the crowd were on their feet as they both came across the finish line just .4 of a second apart with Addison first to see the applause of the waiting crowd lining the pit return. Race 3 became a drawn out 8 Lap race in the deep sand of Wanneroo Park. Michael Addison broke out to a 40 second lead and left Calvin and Porter to fight it out for the minor placings. ‰ÛÏI had some good competition from Dean Porter and Louis Calvin in each moto, which really drove me to win," Addison said. ‰ÛÏI needed this win to get my head straight for the National Motocross Championship, where I need to make up some ground to get back up with the front runners. The next national round will be at Conondale on May 4, so I have some time to prepare," Addison added. Pro Championships Quads fielded the #1 WA Chris Brenton, #1Vic Ryan Lancaster #1 AUS Anthony Yewers and a host of talent that read on paper as the who's who of Quad racing in Australia. It was all going to come down to who was fit enough to handle how rough the track got and who had the will to go for it in the first round. Race 1 saw an amazing site, Yewers upside down in the first corner and having to fight his way through from last into 5th, Some pretty major crashes saw Chad McKay and Milling out of race 1, but borrowed bikes and spares would see them back out to race the rest of the day. Brenton took the first Moto victory with a 7 sec lead over Lancaster and Josh Higson in 3rd. Race 2 saw Brenton again take the lead, with McKay 2nd and Lancaster 3rd. Race 3 Team mates Yewers and Brenton made life hard for each other, coming together through the S Bends and creating a car park with riders waiting for quads and debris to clear a path to resume racing, Lancaster and Mckay had escaped the drama and had put an unbeatable lead between the Yamaha riders and the rest of the grid. Brenton steam rolled his way through the traffic and finished a credible 3rd to seal the win for the day with Yewers making it back to 6th place. Bunbury State Round is just 3 weeks away and already the season is shaping up to be a heart stopper. Lots of racing between the rounds will see who has the stamina to complete the series and top the Podium. For Point standings go to https://mylaps.com/results/showevent.jsp?id=295296
