Micky Dymond wins inaugural AMA Supermoto race in New England

Posted:

All Access Honda's Micky Dymond won in a wild turn of events during the inaugural AMA Supermoto Championship race at the Stafford Motor Speedway. HMC KTM's Kurt Nicoll distanced himself from the pack early to win his first main event of 2007 in M&R AMA Supermoto Unlimited competition, while Troy Lee Designs Honda's David Pingree extended his winning streak to three in a row in the Hot Wheels AMA Supermoto Lites class. HMC KTM's Troy Herfoss, of Australia, grabbed the holeshot to start the AMA Supermoto race, while Graves Yamaha's Mark Burkhart and Troy Lee Designs Honda's Jeff Ward came together in a first turn collision. On the opening lap Herfoss spun sideways in the sand and handed the lead over to Rip It Energy Aprilia's Ben Carlson. Carlson would lead two laps until before crashing in the same sand section that took down Herfoss. On lap five, Mach 1 Yamaha's Steve Drew took over the lead battling with All Access Honda's Micky Dymond but would later surrender the lead to Dymond, who went on to capture his first-ever AMA Supermoto premier class victory. Ward and Herfoss clawed their way onto the podium to round out second and third place, respectively. "I am the most surprised guy here", said Dymond. "All race I really did not know what place I was in. The sun made a glare on my pit board so I could not read it, I battled the whole time coming from mid pack and thought the leaders were gone way out front. This sport is amazing, I want to thank everyone over the years for all their support." Nicoll dominated the track leading every lap of the 16-lap M&R AMA Supermoto Unlimited race. Nicoll's win breaks the four-race winning streak of Rip It Energy Aprilia's Ben Carlson of West Bend, Wis., who finished second. Carlson's Teammate, Darryl Atkins was third. "I got the start I needed," said Nicoll. "I wanted to get upfront to be able to pick good lines and set the pace. This track was perfect for me. I am used to riding in sand and it was a very nice change instead of having the usual dirt. These days I am really happy with everything going on in my life". Pingree led every lap of the Hot Wheels AMA Supermoto Lites main event and took over the lead in the point standings. Graves Motorsports Yamaha's Brandon Currie pressured Pingree all 16 laps but had to settle for second place. HMC's KTM's John Lewis made his debuted in the Lites class, riding impressive taking third place. "I pulled out the start on Brandon (Currie), all day he was going really fast so I needed the jump out of the gate to get ahead," said Pingree. Every point in this series championship is important. I need to keep my intensity high because Brandon keeps me honest every week." AMA Supermoto Race Results
