Serco Yamaha's Luke Styke has been crowned the MX2 Champion at the penultimate round of the 2013 Monster Energy MX Nationals held in Toowoomba Qld in near perfect conditions for racing.

Styke came in to the third of four Queensland rounds needing to score just two points more than nearest rival, Tune Tech backed KTM privateer Kale Makeham to secure the 2013 title.

Makeham was not going to make it easy on Styke and set the tone for the morning by qualifying fastest ahead of Styke.

When the gates dropped for moto one, Makeham grabbed the holeshot and quickly set about building a sizeable lead as Styke quickly worked his way in to second spot. The two leading riders of 2013 then set themselves in to a pace that could not be matched by anyone else on track, with KTM privateer Dylan Long nearly a half a lap down in third position as the moto neared the end.

Up front Styke slowly closed in on Makeham, making an unsuccessful challenge for the lead early in the second to last lap. As the final lap started the two riders were separated by less than a bike length.

Styke stalked Makeham's back wheel before making his move at the bottom of the biggest down hill section on the Toowoomba circuit, cutting underneath the KTM before charging to the finish line for the race win and securing an emotional championship win.

Dylan Long held on for a fine third place moto finish finishing ahead of Choice Motorsports Brock Winston, with Takeshi Katsuya rounding out the top five with his best ride of the season.

With the Red number one plates firmly mounted on his Serco Yamaha, Styke grabbed the lead early in moto two and was never headed taking a very comfortable win to top off a great day.

Behind him, the KTM two stroke pairing of Kale Makeham and Brock Winston battled for the entire race. Winston lead they way for the majority of the moto before Makeham snuck up the inside of him with a few corners to go to steal second place for the moto.

Winston held on for third, while Long made his way through the field from a mid pack start to finish the moto in fourth place, just ahead of Raceline Pirelli Suzuki's Ryan Marmont, with privateer Beau Ralston for the second moto in a row finishing in 6th after coming from the rear of the field.

The Championship win was an emotional one for both Styke and his Serco Yamaha. Styke came agonisingly close to winning the title in 2012 after dominating the majority of the season but missed out after a couple of disastrous rounds near the end of the season.

For his team the Victory was long coming after finishing second in the championship the past two seasons, the finally got to celebrate championship success for the first time since 2007 with their ninth straight round win of the 2013 MX2 Championship.

‰ÛÏFrom the moment I left the final round at Coolum in 2012, I set out a plan to win the championship this year and it feels awesome to have achieved that goal." Styke stated.

‰ÛÏI surrounded myself with the right people, used the right products and I‰Ûªm a part of the best MX2 team in Australia so to have everything fall onto place and make it happen in the last half a lap of the first race was unreal.

‰ÛÏToday was really special for me as I had a few of my mates up from up from home, my girlfriend was here as well as my Mum and Tobz, so it was really nice to get it done in front of them. I can‰Ûªt thank everyone enough for their efforts and support this year and the Serco Yamaha team are awesome,‰Û

For Makeham the weekend served as another reminder on how far he has come in his first year of racing the MX2 class, pushing the championship winner all the way to the end and once again showing that he will be a title favourite when the 2014 season gets underway.

"We are still on the podium which is good, I really want to win and we are getting closer and closer and closer. It is a bit of a bummer that there is only one round to go, as I am coming in to my own now." Makeham stated on the podium at the end of the day.

"My first moto today was good, I was happy with that," he added.

Brock Winston's third place finish for the round was enough to guarantee him a top three finish in this years championship, a great effort for the 25 year old who still has a mathematical chance of catching Makeham for second spot at the final round in Coolum.

"It was another good results today," Winston stated, "I wish I could have started the season with Choice team, I have just started to get comfortable with the team and my results are showing.

"Make certainly pulled something out on that last lap in the second moto, I thought I had him for sure. I was still happy to make my way past a few riders and finish up here, I am happy with how the day went." Winston concluded.

Finishing fourth for the day was Long, who continues to have a very strong finish to his first year in the MX2 class. Long has shown all year that he has the outright speed to mix it with the best Lites riders in the country and is now putting the whole package together and starting to consistently finish at the pointy end of the field.

Rounding out the top five at Toowoomba was Ryan Marmont who finished on 49 points along with Ralston and Choice Motorsports Kayne Lamont.

With most of the days attention focused on Luke Styke wrapping up the MX2 championship, Motul Pirelli Suzuki's Matt Moss was working towards his first MX1 championship securing another round win on his way to extending his championship points lead to 25 points over Motorex KTM's Todd Waters.

Coming in to the round Moss held an eleven point advantage over Waters and quickly set about extending that gap in the Go Pro Superpole qualifying session, finishing second to CDR Yamaha's Billy Mackenzie and picking up two points on Waters who finished the session in fourth. Amazingly all five Superpole riders finished with in half a second of each other!

When racing got underway it was KTM Motorex's Kirk Gibbs who shot out to the front and quickly built a small cushion over the rest of the field, with M.Moss and Waters behind him in second and third place respectively.

Both Gibbs and M.Moss continued to pull away from Waters throughout the race and just after the midway point of the race Moss himself moved in on Gibbs and made the pass for the lead. Gibbs though losing a little ground initially clawed his way back on to the rear wheel of Moss with a couple of laps remaining but was never able to get close enough to make a move for the lead, leaving Moss to claim the moto win.

Waters held on for a comfortable third place finish. Campbell Mining, Suzuki mounted Jake Moss rode to a solid fourth place finish ahead of Mackenzie in fifth position.

Moto two started as a carbon copy of moto one, with Gibbs hitting the lead through the first turn with M.Moss in hot pursuit.

Billy Mackenzie was also in the mix vying for the race lead early in the race before a nasty looking crash up the face of a jump relegated him to the back of the field and handed Waters third position.

Unfortunately for Waters he would also crash leaving himself well down the field and needing to work hard to salvage as many points as possible.

Out front Gibbs continued to build on his race lead all the way to the finish going on to claim his first MX1 moto win in dominating fashion in just his first year in the big bike class.

M.Moss crossed the line in second position and was followed through by the Monster Energy Kawasaki's Adam Monea in third, while Jake Moss made his way in to fourth place in the dying stages of the race to finish just ahead of the second Monster Energy Kawasaki of Jay Marmont.

Todd Waters salvaged a sixth place finish.

The overall win for the day went to M.Moss due to the extra three points he scored over Gibbs in the Superpole session and he will now head into the final round in Coolum next weekend as favourite for the 2013 championship.

"Superpole sort of helped me out today. I just was not feeling great all day, I sort of struggled to find my rhythm, I have been sick all week so I knew this was going to be a tough race and it showed, I had nothing for Gibbs in that second one, he just checked out.

"I knew Todd was not coming by me in the second race, so I knew I had points, I was just focusing on that. I was glad to get the overall and just want to thank the team and everyone else who is supporting me.

With a 25 point championship lead heading into the final round, Moss is not planning on changing anything up and will head home to New South Wales this week before flying back up to Queensland for the final round next weekend.

"I am going to head home and stay in my routine, I am not going to try anything fancy. We are going for a championship but all in all it is just another race, we will keep doing the same thing and hopefully come away with the win." Moss concluded.

For Gibbs it was another amazing day in which he took another step towards becoming one of the countries premier racers and if it was not for the Superpole points that were introduced for this season would have scored his first overall MX1 class win to go along with his first moto win.

‰ÛÏIt feels great to get that first win." Gibbs enthused. "Two holeshots helped today, you can‰Ûªt start much better.

"In the second race the track got hard and it was slipperier than it looked. Strange, I didn‰Ûªt feel like I went that hard in that one, I felt like I was pushing harder in the first," he added.

"In the last laps of that second race, once I had a decent lead I was just saying to myself, ‰Û÷just don‰Ûªt stuff up, get it to the finish!

"I really want to thank everybody involved, my mechanic Kyle and my Mum and Dad, and particularly KTM because a lot of teams never gave me the chance to ride a 450 and KTM gave me the opportunity when I needed it most.‰Û
Todd Waters rounded out the podium at Toowoomba and will not give this championship up without a fight - Credit: Aaryn Minerds
Rounding out the podium was Todd Waters and despite losing 14 points to M.Moss on the day knows that this championship is still a long way from over with 75 championship points on the line at the final round.

‰ÛÏIt was a tough day." Waters stated "It‰Ûªs normally more rutty and technical here instead of hard-packed ‰ÛÒ which isn‰Ûªt my strength, but in that second race I caught Moss and Kirk only to tuck the front end trying to pass.

"That‰Ûªs racing. The important thing is that I can see my pace improving and I‰Ûªm still moving forward so I‰Ûªm confident for Coolum.

"The championship is what it is; I can‰Ûªt control that part so I‰Ûªll just keep doing what I‰Ûªm doing.‰Û
Jay Wilson secured his second round win in three rounds and now sits second in the MXD championship standings - Credit: Aaryn Minerds
New Zealand's Hamish Harwood took a big step towards securing the MXD championship at Toowoomba when he raced to the opening moto win aboard his KTM 250 two stroke, finishing ahead of the resurgent Jay Wilson aboard his GYTR Yamaha.

Corey James once again showed some good pace to finish third in the opening moto ahead of Jack Simpson who came in to the round second in the points standings. Jake Emanualli continued his season long return to racing with a fine fifth place finish while Jay Wilsons younger brother, Dylan Wilson rounded out the top six.

In moto two it was J.Wilson who claimed the moto win and in turn his second round win for the season. Harwood finished in second place for both the moto and the day.

Corey James finished 3rd in moto two, giving him enough points to round out the day on the podium, while Jesse Dobson and Thomas Ravenhorst both bounced back from tough opening moto's to finish fourth and fifth respectively.

Wilson's win coupled with Simpson's 13th place moto two finished was enough to see the Yamaha rider move into second place in the championship, though at 53 points behind Harwood with won round remaining a lot of things will need to go his way if he was to walk away with the 2013 championship.

"I am feeling good with today's result, the second half of the season has really turned around for me." Wilson commented. "we never gave up, we kept putting the hard work in and I really cant thank the team enough.

"The whole team and my personal trainers from Alteregoelite have never stopped believing in me and it was good to come away with another round win for everybody involved.

"My mechanic Wardy (Mike Ward) has been a big part of it, he never once stopped believing in me, he knew I had the potential to run up front and with guys like that backing you it is hard not to win," Wilson added.

In the KTM two stroke Cup it was Errol Willis who kept his perfect season in tact, going 1-1 despite riding a bike that needs some running repairs heading in to the final round next weekend.

Kerrod Morrissy finished the day on the second step of the podium, while David Birch secured third place for the day by count back over Tyson Cherry with both riders finishing the day on 58 points. Cherry though maintains his second place in the championship standings.

The final round of the 2013 Monster Energy MX Nationals will take place in Coolum, Qld next weekend on the 31st of August and the 1st of September with two full days of racing action, including Vets, Quad and Two Stroke classes along with the MX1, MX2 and MXD racing.
