Joan Barreda Moves To Top Of Dakar Rankings, Toby Price Rockets to 5th After Day 2

Posted:

A steady fourth place on a quick first stage where there was more to lose than to win, Joan Barreda got the show on the road today during the first major special stage of the Dakar with an imposing victory.

Already a ten times stage winner on the Dakar, Joan Barreda has had to content himself so far with a 7th final position as his personal best, which can be qualified as a disappointment for the Spaniard who appears to be determined to do his utmost for victory in 2015.

This goal is perfectly within his reach, since the Honda rider continued his collaboration with HRC with a victory on the second stage of the rally between Villa Carlos Paz and San Juan. Battling with Marc Coma and Sam Sunderland all along the 518-km special, Barreda finally benefited from his rivals' problems at the end of the stage.

"I am really happy. Today was amazing. It was really hard, really tough in the last part of special with a lot of tracks and a lot of bumps and it was so physical." Barreda said "But today was one of these days where it is important to get to the finish and we've got here so we are really happy.

"I was alone in some parts, but the most important was to remain calm over the first kilometres and finally we did a really good job. I think it's a good opportunity for victory but the race is really close, so if we can perform like today and gain some minutes and seconds, then it's very important‰Û
Aussie Toby Price finished the day in 5th position and moved himself from 11th to 5th in the overall standings - RallyZone Bauer/Barni
Debutante's Australian Toby Price and Austria's Matthias Walkner made a big impression by taking 5th and 6th place respectively at the finishing line. The sensation 5th place stage result moves Price up to fifth place in the overall standings, 11 minutes and 32 seconds behind Berreda.

"Today was a good day for me! We got through first 300km really well at a fast pace, the navigation wasn't to hard but you still had to really stay on top of your road book." Price explained. "Beyond the 300km point I made a small mistake trying to pass another rider when I thought I might had missed a waypoint and started to second guess myself.

"I then back tracked to find the waypoint and found myself back where I turned around, to be honest it was all over the shop! It just goes to show how much experience you need to master this crazy race.

"Today was incredibly hot in the sand dunes and we all got cooked, other than that it was all good and extremely happy to be sitting in 5th position after stage 2.

The Australian father and son pairing of Simon Pavey, and Llewellyn Sullivan-Pavey are currently ranked 80th and 81st overall after finishing stage two in those exact positions. The duo are separated by just one minute, some three hours and 15 minutes behind the race leader.

At the time of posting this report Australia's fourth rider in Clayton Jacobsen has only registered a time at way point 10 of 13, however a post on his facebook page has confirmed that he was able to finish the day's stage. As soon as timing is updated we will update his results.
Leader after day one, Sam Sunderland had a shocker of a day on Day 2 and is out of contention already in this years race - RallyZone Bauer/Barni
