Jeremy Van Horebeek Sets Career Milestone With Czech MXGP Victory

Posted:

21,500 fans at the Loket circuit in the Czech Republic were thrilled by Yamaha Factory Racing's Jeremy Van Horebeek‰Ûªs maiden MXGP overall round win after his won the second moto at the 14th round of the 2014 World Motocross championship.

Van Horebeek took a solitary second position behind runaway victor Kevin Strijbos of the Rockstar Suzuki team in Moto1, setting the stage for a long and patient stalk of the reigning MXGP number one, Red Bull KTM's Antonio Cairoli in Moto2.

Van Horebeek kept close to the Sicilian and in the last three laps then pulled the pin to pressurise his friend and rival. When Cairoli bobbled and missed a rut on the entry to the corner at one of the lowest parts of the hillside track then YZ450F pilot had his chance and squeezed through to lead and hold his advantage to the flag for an emotional end to a bumper day for Yamaha after Kiara Fontanesi won her third MXW title and Christophe Charlier walked the MX2 podium for the first time this year.

After previously accumulating eleven podium finishes in a row up until his fourth position in Finland two weeks ago, Van Horebeek was back on the box in style and with the added bonus of trimming the deficit to Cairoli in the MXGP standings to 57 points with 150 points still on offer.

‰ÛÏIt is difficult to explain how this feels." Van Horebeek admitted. "I think this is one of my best days ever. It is a special one but it won‰Ûªt be my last one.

"The first moto was pretty good but the start wasn't great and I had to come through the pack and Kevin had already gone. In the second I was second right away with Tony.

"I had to fight the whole moto and we were both sliding around and losing control. We were on the limit. With two laps to go I knew I had a great chance but I wanted to do it cleanly.

"I showed my front wheel once on the uphill just to let him know I was there and then did it. I‰Ûªm so stoked. It is unbelievable.

"Once I started to get on the podium every weekend this season I knew I had to work harder and also get the rest I needed." Van Horebeek continued. "I did a great job and I feel really fit.

"The bike has also felt better and better because this is my first year with the team and every GP you learn about it [the bike]. I think the combination of my personal development and with the Yamaha made this result.

"I‰Ûªm looking forward to Lommel now. Tony is one of the best sand riders in the world and I plan to have something special for my fans. First we‰Ûªll enjoy this for a day and then start work for that one.‰Û

Strijbos who raced to his first MXGP race win in the opening race was running the closest he has been to a Grand Prix success for seven years and his third at Loket.

The 28 year old circulated behind Van Horebeek with Cairoli leading for almost the entire duration of the race. He pushed to overtake his countryman and snare second place which would have been enough for the top step but ended up watching Van Horebeek catch and pass Cairoli.

Strijbos was close to the back of the champion on the final lap but couldn‰Ûªt demote the Sicilian. His one-three results were still enough to be runner-up and toast a best finish yet of 2014, as well as his seventh podium of the year.

‰ÛÏI felt great in the first moto and had a good start." Strijbos explained. "My pace was enough to do the job. I had a small dip half-way through the second moto and I saw ‰Û÷Jere‰Ûª pass Tony and tried to do the same on the last lap and I almost got him. It was close.

"I had some good parts on the track but also some bad ones and I made a few mistakes that meant I had some cramps in my hamstrings. I tried all I could. I have to be happy with second place and being back on the podium for sure.‰Û

Rounding out the podium was Cairoli who has admitted that the Loket track is not one of his favorites. The Italian posted 3-2 results for the day and continues to lead the 2014 MXGP championship by a commanding 57 points.

‰ÛÏI‰Ûªm a bit disappointed to lose the GP but happy because my riding was pretty good, especially for Loket, which for sure is not one of my favorite tracks." Cairoli stated. "Now I look forward to Lommel and it‰Ûªs a track that suits me.

"Jeremy (van Horebeek) put some pressure on me in the second heat but I also made a mistake. I was pushing as much as I could but he was riding for the win and I was riding not to crash and not to get injured.‰Û
