Jeffrey Herlings Returns From Injury To Win Trentino MX2 GP

Posted:

The Red Bull KTM Factory Racing teams Jeffrey Herlings returned to action this weekend in the MX2 class winning the Trentino round of the World Motocross Championship in front of a large Italian crowd.

Herlings, on the KTM 250 SX-F fought hard throughout to win the opening moto by three seconds from Arnaud Tonus but admitted later that he was missing some bike rhythm after his injury layoff.

Herlings knew he had moved up to third place in the championship points after the first moto and was intent in trimming the deficit even further in the second race. He was sixth out of the gate and sat at fifth through the opening half of the race before making a move into fourth place with 16 minutes and two laps to go.

He wrapped up the race in second place after the win went to compatriot Glenn Coldenhoff, which was enough for the overall GP victory. Herlings is now in third place in the points, just ten points off the leader Coldenhoff.

‰ÛÏMy starts were not so good but I managed to work my way to the front to win the first race and to finish second in the second race." Herlings explained. "Considering I was injured and had also been sick with a virus infection and I haven‰Ûªt had much time on the bike, we can‰Ûªt really complain.‰Û

Glenn Coldenhoff again put his works RM-Z250 in the mix by taking third position overall finishing just behind Arnaud Tonas and his third podium result in a row ‰ÛÒ after racing to victory in the second moto.

The Dutchman took to the start gate with the 13th-pick after becoming tangled in a first-corner pile-up during the MX2 Qualification Heat that saw him having to come through the pack from last position. It was a scenario he did not repeat for the first moto sprint of 30 minutes and two-laps on Sunday although the former GP winner did have his work cut-out.

He pushed through from the lower regions of the top-10 and although he relegated Romain Febvre to take seventh on the last lap, an off-track excursion was costly and he rolled-over the finish-line back in eighth spot.

A few technical changes to the bike were beneficial for for Coldenhoff in the second moto as he tussled with Valentin Guillod for the lead and then set a pace to pull clear of the Swiss and register his second career chequered flag in as many meetings.

‰ÛÏIt is good to be back on the podium again." Coldenhoff stated. "Especially with that first moto result. I had a bad start and the track was very one-line then.

"I was a bit too slow in the first 10 minutes and by the time I picked-it-up, I missed some momentum to make the passes. I finished eighth. The team suggested some set-up changes and I didn‰Ûªt really agree but they paid off; so I‰Ûªm really happy those guys are behind me.

"I followed Guillod until I could see that he would slow down a little bit. I took the lead and held it to the finish line."

Valentin Guillod's second place in the second moto was enough for him to finish the day out in fourth overall, with Ramain Febvre finishing the day equal on points with Jordi Tixier, but was awarded fifth place overall due to his higher finish in moto 2.

Australia's Luke Styke racing for the Kemea Yamaha team had his best overall result to date, finishing in 16th and 13th in the two races to finish 12th overall for the round.

Round five of the World Motocross Championship heads to Bulgaria next weekend the 19th and 20th of April.
