After a six-month hiatus following right knee reconstruction surgery in October 2024, five-time world champion Jeffrey Herlings made his much-anticipated return to the FIM World MXGP Championship at the MXGP of Sardegna.
The Dutch motocross legend, renowned as the most successful Grand Prix winner of all time, returned to action with Red Bull KTM Factory Racing, aiming to fine-tune his setup and build back his race fitness.
The 30-year-old’s comeback at the sand-soaked Riola Sardo circuit was nothing short of impressive, given the circumstances. It marked only his sixth day back on the bike after an extensive recovery process, and despite his challenges, he managed to secure his first MXGP points of the 2025 season. Starting the weekend with some rust, Herlings battled through arm pump in the first race and finished 20th, before rebounding in race two. After leading the opening laps, he held strong to finish 7th, securing 15th overall.
Reflecting on his performance, Herlings acknowledged the challenges of returning after such a lengthy break: “Yes, a P20 can hurt but…I think it was just my sixth day on the bike after six months. So, for the circumstances, I think it was quite good today. It was the first time I’d done a 35-minute moto! We got some points and finishing 7th in the second moto was quite good. Now just to build and get better every single week. Step-by-step now.”
Looking ahead, Herlings is focused on gaining momentum in the coming weeks. With his 2025 season only just beginning, the world champion is determined to build on each race and continue to challenge for top results as he works back to peak form.
