Hurley and Marshall deliver the goods

Shift Motul Suzuki's Daryl Hurley and Serco Yamaha's Robbie Marshall emerged with overall honours in an absorbing round two of the 2005 Maxxis Australian Motocross Championship at Horsham on Sunday, April 10.
Craig Anderson was looking good for another clean sweep until he went over the bars in moto 2 trying to slow down for the yellow flags, the crash resulted in an injured shin that slowed his progress on the race re-start. Photo: Garry Morrow
While 29-year-old Hurley (RM-Z450) went about trimming arch-rival Craig Anderson's lead in the Pro Open class to a paltry 2pts, Marshall finished second and fourth in the two 16-lap Pro Lites races to jump an amazing eight spots in the championship battle in one fell swoop ‰ÛÒ from 10th to second. At this rate, the YZ250F-mounted Marshall, 21, is already well on his way to usurping his ninth place in last year's Pro Lites championship, with only teammate Cameron Taylor (YZ250F) in front of him heading into round three at Toowoomba (Qld) on April 24. "This is my best result in a long time," said Marshall after his second place behind No Fear Honda's Troy Dorron (CRF250F) in race one. My fingers were getting a little bit sore at the end, but I kept at it the whole 30 minutes. "Then to go on and claim the overall win was something else ‰ÛÒ for me and the team. Now the plan is to continue the momentum we have built up, and hopefully come out of the Queensland double-header (Coolum follows the weekend after Toowoomba) in an even stronger position."

In a meeting which 'enjoyed' most of the elements ‰ÛÒ heat, fearsome gales and afternoon precipitation ‰ÛÒ Motorex KTM practitioner Ryan Marmont (250SXF) also created headlines after breaking his national motocross drought in Pro Lites race two ‰ÛÒ finally taking advantage of a fourth successive holeshot. Marmont's exuberance was matched a little over an hour later by Hurley, who led home a New Zealand trifecta in the second Pro Open battle, with defending champion Darryll King (CDR Nokia Yamaha YZ450F) second from sibling Shayne King (TeamMoto Honda CRF450R). Anderson (No Fear Honda CRF450R), after winning race one in a canter, finished fourth in the second instalment ‰ÛÒ which was red-flagged at the first attempt when a rider crashed after a torrid landing from the circuit's giant 30-metre tabletop. However, just seconds before the race was officially abandoned, Anderson was the first rider on the scene, and he too crashed after trying too hard to reduce speed ‰ÛÒ injuring his right shin in the process. Officials then let the sore Anderson, 27, saddle up for the re-start, which he led for a lap before deciding that caution was the better part of valour. Hurley was only too happy to take over the running on the rain-affected track, and his 7.992sec victory over Darryll King was the first for Suzuki's all-new RM-Z450 in the Aussie title.

"I was cruising in that second race," said Hurley, who has been struggling with an eye injury for a month. "I suppose I was finally going to break through, and after crashing in race one this was the perfect race to redeem myself." Earlier, Hurley was on polesitter Anderson's bumper in race one, setting the scene for an enticing arm wrestle. However, Hurley's challenge evaporated when he crashed ‰ÛÒ although the gap to Darryll King was such that the Suzuki pilot maintained his hold on second position to the flag. Just a few laps earlier, Hurley had set the fastest lap of the day ‰ÛÒ a scintillating 1:47.726, with Anderson (1:48.258) the only other rider to join him under the 50-second mark. 1996 world 500cc champion Shayne King was fourth in the opener, after his rear tyre popped off the bead on lap four. "At first I thought the wheel had collapsed, but then I realised what had happened," said Shayne, who has finished second din the past two Pro Open titles behind his brother. "It was useless coming out of corners, which was the same feeling I had when this same thing happened to me about five years ago."
Motorex KTM's Ryan Marmont (3) finally delivered - after holeshoting every race this year - when he lead home team-mate Daniel McCoy (65) for a maiden victory for the 250SXF four stroke. Photo: Garry Morrow
Shayne (38pts), after winning the equivalent Horsham round in 2004, finished fourth this year on 38pts, behind, Hurley (47), Anderson (43) and Darryll (42), who is slowly returning to his championship-winning zeal. With the quartet dominating the four races to date, Anderson has now accumulated 93pts, just two in advance of Hurley (91). Then follows Darryll (82), Shayne (74) and yet another New Zealander, Peter Broxholme (CRF450R, 59pts). Broxholme finished fifth overall in round two, ahead of two-stroke mounted Aussie surprise packet, Adam Cini (Whale's Kawasaki XK250). In Pro Lites race one, the irrepressible Dorron, who hasn't finished outside the top three in a Pro Lites (nee 125cc) championship since 2000, became the first multiple winner in 2005 with a 1.823sec win over Marshall, who was followed to the chequered flag by Queenslander Daniel Reardon (Whale's Kawasaki KX250F), lap one crasher Taylor and Danny Anderson (CRF250R). In what was the start of an ugly day of mechanical drama for the Pro Lites armada, a number of the big names either struggled to see out race one, or were sidelined completely. That cast included defending champion Cody Cooper (No Fear Honda CRF250R), who briefly held the lead on lap 10 before his cam timing went awry; Mitch Hoad (Chris Watson Motorcycles YZ250F), who broke a header pipe; 2003 national champion Troy Carroll (CDR Nokia Yamaha YZ250F), who was struggling with carburettor gremlins; and Daniel McCoy (Motorex KTM 250SXF), whose shock collapsed when a bolt fell out. Cooper, who won both Horsham races in 2004 and sat on pole position in 2005, laboured to ninth in race one, while New Zealander Luke Burkhart (Shift Motul Suzuki RM-Z250) was sixth from Carroll and Marmont - the latter a crasher on the last lap while holding down forth position. In race two, the mechanical despair continued, with Reardon (rear shock) and Dorron (engine) both failing to last the distance, while Carroll, Cooper and Burkhart all hit the terra firma ‰ÛÒ twice in the case of Burkhart. However, Carroll's bingle was the biggest of them all, although the popular Toowoomba rider will be fit and ready to perform in front of vocal home crowd in two weeks. Despite the high attrition rate, Marmont's all-the-way win over teammate McCoy was sublime, leaving Taylor to claim the final podium position from Marshall and hard-charger Warren Smart (CRF250R). Seven riders have now finished on a Pro Lites podium in the opening two rounds, which is reflected in a logjammed leaderboard. While Taylor enjoys a 16pt cushion out in front, the gap between second-placed Marshall and ninth-placed Dorron is just 12pts. Anderson is next in line after Marshall, followed by Burkhart, Marmont, McCoy, Carroll and Smart. PRO OPEN RESULTS
