The 2005 Maxxis Australian Motocross Championship, presented by Yamaha, reached the halfway mark at Coolum (Qld) on May 1, with New Zealanders Daryl Hurley (Suzuki) and Darryll King (Yamaha) continuing to dominate proceedings in the absence of early championship favourite Craig Anderson.

With Anderson (No Fear Honda CRF450R) missing for the second Queensland round in as many weeks with three broken toes, Hurley (Shift Motul Suzuki RM-Z450) and defending champion King (CDR Nokia Yamaha YZ450F) both scored a win and second in the two 16-lappers, with Darryll awarded the overall win on a countback. Shayne King (TeamMoto Honda CRF450R) completed the podium in both races. "It's disappointing not to take the overall win today after being so strong in both motos," said Hurley. "But we maintained the championship lead, which is important. Race one could easily have been a non-finish and that would have seen us drop a lot of points to the other guys." Hurley has now scored 183pts out of a possible 200 in 2005, with his lead over Darryll King a meagre 7pts with four rounds remaining. Meanwhile, 27-year-old Anderson remains in fifth position on 93pts despite his two-round convalescence, behind Danny Ham (Shift Motul Suzuki RM-Z450, 97) and Shayne King (156).
The bravery award went to Motorex KTM's Lee Ellis who qualified 4th fastest in the Pro Open with a pinky that was almost severed last week. Photo: Garry Morrow.
The opening Pro Open race, run in stifling conditions, saw Hurley recover from a slow start to eventually win by a healthy 9.068sec over Darryll King ‰ÛÒ but it wasn't a completely trouble-free run for the 29-year-old. The front-end of Hurley's RM-Z450 was cleaned up by some trackside debris in the opening laps, leaving him with limited stopping power for the balance of the journey. Meanwhile, Darryll King was experience some misery of his own ‰ÛÒ all physical. "The heat got to me in the opening race I felt drained and really uncomfortable," King said. "Thankfully the cloud came over in time for the second race." Behind Shayne King, Craig Carmichael (CRF450R) finished an excellent fourth ‰ÛÒ albeit 46 seconds in arrears of third place ‰ÛÒ ahead of Luke Nelson (TeamMoto Kawasaki KX250) and Nathan Brochtrup (Singleton Motorcycles YZ450F). Meanwhile, perennial top 10 runners Lee Ellis (Motorex KTM 450SXF) and Adam Cini (Whale Kawasaki KX250) both failed to finish, with the former's injured wrist also keeping him off the start line for race two. Ellis, 27, had previously shown great speed at Coolum, including a second in last year's opening race behind Darryll King. Race two saw Darryll King pass Hurley on the last lap ‰ÛÒ but only after Hurley's machine limped over the line with "fuel-line" problems. Meanwhile, Shayne King was an extremely lonely third ‰ÛÒ 48 seconds behind Hurley and 51 in front of fourth-placed Ham. Queenslander Mick Cook (YZ450F) was fifth from the indefatigable former Australian champion Glen Bell (Full Throttle Sports Honda CRF450R).
As usual the Pro Lites went down to the wire, Ryan Marmont (3) was on fire and nothing, not even gun privateer Warren Smart could stop him. Photo: Garry Morrow
In Pro Lites, New Zealander Luke Burkhart (Shift Motul Suzuki RM-Z250) became the fifth separate race winner in 2005, joining Cameron Taylor (Serco Yamaha YZ250F), Troy Dorron (No Fear Honda CRF250R), Ryan Marmont (Motorex KTM 250SXF) and Troy Carroll (CDR Nokia Yamaha YZ250F). However, the 21-year-old ran out of puff in race two, and it was the pugnacious Marmont who motored to his third win of the year ‰ÛÒ and the day's overall honours. The opening 18-lapper saw Burkhart defeat championship leader Taylor by 3.300sec after Taylor crashed seconds after taking the lead from the Kiwi, and set the fastest lap of the day ‰ÛÒ across both Pro classes. Burkhart motored around the Coolum layout in a best of 1:48.452, with Hurley's 1:49.416 the closest any other rider got to the benchmark. Twenty-year-old Daniel McCoy (Motorex KTM 250SXF) finished third in race one ‰ÛÒ the same position he would fill in the second instalment. Behind McCoy, Daniel Reardon (Whale Kawasaki KX250F), Marmont and defending champion Cody Cooper (No Fear Honda CRF250R) filled positions 4-6. Carroll, who came back to form with a win in front of his home crowd in Toowoomba (Qld) a week earlier, was the only notable race one DNF after colliding with a fallen bike and hurting his knee.
FTS Scrivens Honda racing's Kade Mosig would have given the Pro Lites a run for their money had he not been blitzing the Rookies class. Photo: Garry Morrow
Undeterred, Carroll fought back in race two to finish sixth, with Marmont victorious over privateer Warren Smart (CRF250R), McCoy, polesitter Cooper and Taylor. Smart was certianly the revealtion of he moto though when the 2004 Jono Porter, privateer of the year lead 80 percent of the moto until fatigue set in. Smart, from Mildura (Vic), finished fourth overall on 36pts, behind Marmont (41), McCoy (40) and Taylor (38). The result saw him leapfrog four positions in the championship battle from ninth to fifth, with McCoy also making a big jump ‰ÛÒ from sixth to third. Taylor continues to lead on 156pts, ahead of Marmont (140), McCoy (118), Robbie Marshall (Serco Yamaha YZ250F, 114), Smart (113), Burkhart (109) and Carroll (108). Fullthrottle Sports Honda Jnr Development rider Kade Mosig rode hard all day to overcome Motorex KTM's Louis Calvin in the opening round of the Rookies Championship. Mosig served notice early that he was the man to beat when he qualified fastest and staggeringly would have been fifth on the Pro Lites grid. Third overall on count back was the Lee Hogan coached South Australian Sean Williamson. reigning Queensland champion Brendan Harrison had a dark day with crashes seeing the Motorex KTM riders campaign get of to a shocking start. "I‰Ûªm thrilled; everything went to plan this weekend," said Mosig. "Louis rode well in the 2nd Moto and Sean was riding fast in the 1st so I need to stay on my game to keep in front of those boys come Newcastle in a few weeks." Round five of the 2005 Maxxis Australian Motocross Championship, presented by Yamaha, will be held in Newcastle (NSW) on Sunday, May 22. Main Photo:
Yamaha National Cup graduate Ford Dale (F) showed he is more than capable of running with the big boys. 2 Holeshots and sixth overall was an impressive debut.
