Festival of racing set for ASBK Grand Final at Phillip Island

Posted:

Over 260 racers from 23 different classes will contest the multi-discipline QBE Australian Superbike Championships Grand Final at Phillip Island this weekend.

A 'festival' of motorcycle racing, the event brings together racers from road and dirt backgrounds to battle at one of the world's most challenging circuits.

With Glenn Allerton sealing his second Superbike title in Tasmania, the race in the premier class is now on for the runner-up, and no less than 6 riders remain in contention.

Team Honda's Jamie Stauffer will be the man with the target on his back, with the in-form Troy Herfoss hot on his heels.

The race for QBE Supersport remains wide open, and the top-of-table clash presents an incredible contrast of experience and youth.

Points leader Kevin Curtain is more than double the age of Brodie Waters, the man most likely to upstage his title charge.

The Yamaha veteran and Suzuki young gun will not only need to attack, however, as positions 3-5 sit just single figure points behind them.

Honda Australian Prostock honours could go the way of Yamaha's Cru Halliday as early as the first race, but there is no discounting the challenge of Linden Magee who has ridden exceptionally in the 2+4 events.

Yamaha's 'Mad' Mike Jones may have already stitched up a dominant Suzuki Superstock title, but that won't lessen the appetite of a strong field, the new breed of emerging Aussie stars.

20 riders will hold on the throttle in the Superlites class, with MotoGP support wildcard Josh Hook in the box seat to beat home Nicky Diles.

Another 28 riders are injected into the mix with the inclusion of the popular Supermoto S1 & S2 and Supermoto RR classes, with their sideways signature set to thrill crowds.

Phillip Island's go-kart circuit will play host to a pair of entertaining mini bike classes ‰ÛÒ mini moto and mini motard. These pocket rockets are playing for keeps in another exciting addition to the regular ASBK classes.

The anticipated return of Thumpercross to Phillip Island has resulted in strong entries across the various classes - no fewer than 100 racers will do battle on the circuit's grass-track infield.

A total of 48 individual races will be contested across all disciplines, a true two-wheel motorsport festival.
