He's on the right track to claim his third consecutive Australian motocross crown and Yamaha's Darryll King feels right at home. Afterall, he is in his accustomed position, alone on top of the points standings. The 36-year-old former world 500cc vice-champion zipped past early series leader and fellow Kiwi Daryl Hurley at round six in Penguin, Tasmania, a week ago and is now two points clear at the top. He's leading the series for the first time this season and, as the season winds down, this is certainly the right time to be in front. "I've been fortunate, with a bit of bad luck for Daryl Hurley in Tasmania, but I've always been in the hunt and have been chipping away all season. Now it's game on. "To tell the truth, I've been struggling a bit this season, ever since I injured myself before Christmas. I'm seeing a specialist this week and will be having another scan on my left foot. "What I really need is a big break from the sport and an operation. But I don't want to sit out of the racing now though. I'll just be giving it everything I've got for the final two rounds. "I am really enjoying my racing and absolutely love the Yamaha. What I have extra over some of my rivals is experience. There are a few guys who can beat me over the shorter sprint races but, in the Australian nationals, the races are 30 minutes and that's where experience counts. It's the long races where the really good riders come through and my bike's built to go and go and go." He concedes that, machinery aside, he's well below where he was at the same time last season but the veteran is still top of the standings and that's what counts at the end of the series. "It's annoying the heck out of me this season but I'm already looking towards next season. I'm not thinking about retirement yet. I'm still motivated and still love to race motocross. The Craig Dack Racing Nokia Yamaha is a great bike and I think the 2006 model will be even better again. I have no complaints and no excuses if I don't win, this bike is one I can win on."
