Dean Porter wraps up two WAMX state titles with a round to Spare

Posted:

The Smarter than Smoking WA State Motocross Championships headed to Noble Falls on Sunday August 12th for the 5th Round of the States 6 round series.

Dean Porter has been the headline all year winning race after race, round after round a lot like 2011 Champion Michael Addison.

Porter's winning streak that continued at Noble falls, has seen him seal the Pro Open Championship with one round still remaining, along with the Pro Lite Championship

Porter had amassed a perfect season of wins until the 2nd race at Nobles, where he came in 4th in the Open class, though he did enough to to keep is round win streak in tact.

Luke Davis who became the only other riders so far this year to win a race in the class when he raced to the moto two win, his best result in a WA State Round, backing that result up with 5th in race 1 and 2nd in race 3 for 3rd overall.

Louis Calvin returned to the series after a long lay off with injury taking 2nd 2nd 3rd for overall 2nd place, Calvin looked the goods on the track and competition at round 6 between himself and Porter will be a huge highlite.

In the Pro Lites Porter took race 1 & 2 wins but it was local club rider Stevie Heilers who had the crowd on their feet cheering him as he passed Porter for the lead on occasions, it wasn‰Ûªt until race 3 that he finally held 1st place and took the win claiming the overall at his home club.

Ashley Whisler claimed his 3rd podium for the season with 5th 3rd and 2nd place finishes and sits just 8 points behind Josh Adams who holds 2nd for the championship.

Although these two championships have been won, seeded numbers are up for grabs from 2-10 in both classes with all Pro‰Ûªs working out what they need to do in round 6 to secure the lowest number possible.

The Quad Championship was brilliant at Noble Falls, it was a track where the quads accomplish similar laptimes as the Pro two wheelers, but this day was special due to Australia #1 Pro Quad Champion Luke Gaisford doing the unthinkable and got the fastest laptime of anyone, including Dean Porter.

The quad riders relished the slick track with fast exciting races and riders able to shine on their preferred hard pack circuit.

Matt Robbins lead the first race for 5 of the 7 laps, before Ryan Lancaster made the pass and took 1st. Lancaster then completed his day with 2 thirds to come in second for the day.

Jordan Dummett was on fire with 5th in moto 1 and got straight up into second place in moto‰Ûªs two and three and took 3rd overall.

Luke Gaisford came back from a bad round in Geraldton where a crash in the first corner cost him. This round he as able to finish 2nd in moto 1 and after holeshotting race 2 and 3, he went on to take the win in both motos and in doing do claimed the overall win for round 5.

The Quad Championship will come down to the final moto of round 6 with only 21 points separating Gaisford and Lancaster, Dummett sits in third with Joel Mortimer and Andrew Vincent are within striking distance.

The Womens Championship was decided at round 3 of their Championship, with 2 rounds in 7 days the women were really tested.

Courtney Hirst and Jess Moore two young women synonymous with Womens Motocross went into the round on equal points setting the stage for an amazing day.

Hirst‰Ûªs day didn‰Ûªt go to plan, dropping the bike in moto 1 then a DNF in Moto 2 cost her any chance of taking the title, but a borrowed bike for moto 3 secured her second place for the overall.

It was Shelley Connor who took 2nd for the round and 3rd overall, while Storme Green took 3rd for the round and 4th in the series by just 1 point.

Moore dominated the day for the round win and stood high on the podium with her State Championship red Plate #1, collectively thanking family friends and sponsors.

The 6th and final round of the 2012 Smarter than Smoking WA State Motocross Championships will be at AJS Wanneroo Park on Sept 16th.
