Dean Ferris has completed his first ever MX2 GP campaign with a commendable 6th overall in the championship standings after a long season filled with successes.
In 2013 Ferris secured his first overall MX2 win in Belgium, and also the moto one victory in Matterly Basin UK, along with overall podiums in Qatar, Portugal and Finland. There were also some disappointments along the way with a broken collarbone which saw him miss the Dutch GP ‰ÛÒround 3.
The final event of the year held at the infamous Lierop sand circuit in the Netherlands put the Monster Energy Yamaha rider to the test in his first ever sand GP.
Having qualified in 8th on Saturday, constant overnight rain turned the already tricky Lierop circuit into a rutted and rough affair but Ferris adapted to the conditions well and after tangling at the start with another rider he managed to round the opening lap of Moto 1 in 5th spot.
10 minutes into the moto he received a face full of roost which snapped his helmet peak off and Ferris had to fight hard to win back his lost positions trying to avoid the roost from the riders ahead of him. He fought back to 4th but then lost a spot with 3 laps to go and crossed the finish line in 5th.
A second lap crash in moto 2 would put Ferris way down the field but he quickly remounted and gave chase to the train ahead. Posting lap times almost 5 seconds faster than his rivals, Ferris managed to rocket back to 8th before he ran out of time completed the moto in 8th.
‰ÛÏMy first sand race so I was pretty happy with the first moto and I was riding strongly in the second one and there was a freight train going on." Ferris expalined. "It is a bit disappointing because I came within reach of fifth in the championship in the last moto.
"Coldenhoff is good in the sand, so he got it back. Anyway not bad for my first sand GP: I wanted to do better but I‰Ûªm glad a long season has come to an end.
"In some ways I feel like I am a GP rookie. I only did five events last year and there was always going to be a lot to learn, I can be proud enough of sixth in the world championship and that win in Belgium.‰Û
