The Northern Territory News has rpeorted that local Drag Racers have concerns about upgrades to the Drag Strip at Hidden Valley after the recent announcment that the Australian Superbike Championship will be staged during planned track works.
The paper reported that the Hidden Valley Drag Racing Association secured $3 million in Federal Government funding last November to upgrade its track to an international standard.
President
Peter Lockart told the NT News'
Matt Cunningham that work was due to start on the project in February, with the hope it would be finished in time for the start of the drag racing season in May.
But he said the work would now be put on hold to accommodate the Superbikes after the NT Government last week announced a round of the Australian championships would be held in Darwin in April.
"I love it (the Superbikes) - I can't wait - but it's going to throw into total disarray the planned work for the drag strip," Lockart told Cunningham.
Mr Lockart said he feared the money would be lost if the work was not done soon.
"There's $3 million sitting there that needs to be spent," he said. "We have been working towards getting started in February so we can be racing by mid-April."
But Solomon MHR
Damian Hale said the funding was guaranteed.
"That money was a commitment we made at the last election and that will be seen through," he said.
"The Superbikes have caused a headache we don't mind having."
