Red Bull rider Cyril Despres put in a magnificent ride in Monday‰Ûªs Stage Nine of the Dakar 2013 when it resumed for the second half of this year‰Ûªs edition.

The curret title-holder won the stage and moved into second overall while his factory team-mate Ruben Faria of Portugal took control of the overall lead.

Despres, a multiple winner on KTM machines went out on what was the longest stage of the rally knowing it was time to make an impression. He put his mixed fortunes of previous days behind him and finished the stage in five hours 41.36, three minutes 21 ahead of Joan Barreda of Spain.

With Faria in the lead, Despres now has a fighting chance of defending his title with a deficit of just 5 minutes 23 and many kilometers to go before the finish in Santiago, Chile on January 19.

The French rider had a magnificent day out on what was certainly one of the most gruelling stages of the rally this year. He left the starting line in the early hours of the morning lying in fifth place overall with a deficit of around 25 minutes, including a penalty of 15 minutes for having changed an engine.

The fact that he was able to cut that to just five minutes was a testament to the immense skill and fighting spirit skill of KTM‰Ûªs four times Dakar winner. Despres went on the attack as soon as he hit the track and fought hard all the way to claim his thirty-first career stage victory.

Despres put his efforts today in part down to his extreme physical fitness but said it was time he made his presence felt.

"It was a good day with lots of attacking and lots of turns." Despres stated. "I knew that it would be physically demanding, that I'd have to give it my all.

"I've got blisters on my feet and my hands are sore, but I had to bang my fist on the table to say "Hey, I'm here!"

"Ruben and I are racing well for the team, he's in good shape and that's the most important thing right now.‰Û

For race leader heading in to the rest day, French Yamaha rider David Casteu, stage 9 proved to be a race ending stage after he crashed into a cow when tackling a turn 120 km into the stage.

This left the rider from Nice with a dislocated right shoulder and a damaged motorcycle, a situation which became a full-blown nightmare when a mechanical 15 km from the finish line cost him several hours.

Casteu made it to the end of the special on foot, but is all but out of this years event. Things were not much better for team-mate and early race leader Olivier Pain. The second-in-command of the Yamaha team also hit the deck several times, losing about 32' and slipping to sixth overall.

It was another solid day for the Australian top runners, with Todd Smith leading the way for the stage finishing in 17th place for the stage.

Rod Faggotter continues to lead the way overall for the Aussies in 16th place, however he is slowly being reeled in by KTM mounted Ben Grabham who moved up to 18th in the Bike class after stage 9.

Matt Fish who broke news of his tough end of the first week in this years race, also had another tough day on stage 9, however the resilient Australian continues to push through to ensure he remains in the 2013 event to help out his fellow Husqvarna team mates.

For those who missed reading about Fish's iron man efforts on stage 5, 6 and 7 of last week, read the below quote from his facebook page that he posted over the weekend.

"After stopping and helping my team mate finish stage 5 I started from the rear of the field on stage 6 but my motor stopped 11km from the end of the first half of that stage." Fish posted.

"After 5 hours of pushing I finished the first half and changed motors and continued on to finish at 4.20am and then I started the next stage 55 minutes later. It's been a rough few days!"

The Quad class continues to be lead by Argentina's Marcos Patronelli who again finished second for the stage, his fourth straight second place stage finish.

Australian Paul Smith was unfortunate not to finish stage 9 in 5th position and move inside the top 10.

The Honda mounted rider inccured a 15 minute time penalty that seen him finish the stage in 9th place, still managing to climb up one position to 12th in the quad class after 9 stages of racing.
