The Croatian Grand Prix was a night of disappointment for Australian Jason Crump, but for American veteran Greg Hancock it was the night of nights as he was crowned World Champion for the second time in his career.
The likeable and popular 41 year-old Californian won his first World Championship in 1997 and it took Hancock 14 years to fulfil his dream of a second World Championship.
But Crump was unable to repeat his Danish performance from two weeks ago and managed to collect just 8 points from his five heats. Thinking he had enough points for the semi-finals, Crump was advised by officials that he was eliminated on a countback to Fredrik Lindgren and Rune Holta.
"My second ride in heat eight cost me a semi-final place." said a disappointed Crump. "I started off gate four and was baulked by another rider in the first turn and somehow I managed to stay on the bike, but the damage was done as I tried to catch the others but to no avail and zero points."
"With just one GP to go, I am currently in fourth position but there are a few riders breathing down my neck so I need to get a good result and finish the season on a high."
"And congratulations to Greg (Hancock) who was clearly the best rider this season and the most consistent; he's a very worthy winner."
Round 11 will be held on 8 October 2011 at Gorzow, Poland.
