Chase Sexton made an impressive return from injury at round 11 of the AMA Supercross Championship in Detroit, charging to a second-place finish in the 450SX main event and signalling a welcome return to form.
Racing for the first time since a three-round injury layoff after sustaining lower back and hip injuries in a practice crash ahead of the 2026 Daytona Supercross, Sexton wasted no time re-establishing himself at the front, showing strong speed from the outset at Ford Field by going second fastest in the opening qualifying session before ending the day fourth overall after losing a fast lap due to a post-session sound control issue.
The 450SX contender carried that pace into the night show, launching to the front in his heat race and controlling it from start to finish to take a convincing win and underline his readiness to fight at the front once again.
In the main event, Sexton powered into the lead early and remained a constant presence at the sharp end of the field. Despite briefly dropping back during the race, he stayed composed and capitalised on late-race developments ahead of him to move back into second place, securing a podium finish in his comeback ride.
The result marked a significant step forward after a challenging period on the sidelines, with Sexton showing both speed and resilience across the night to leave Detroit sixth in the championship standings.
Reflecting on his return, Sexton was encouraged by both the result and how he felt on the bike after time away from racing.
“Detroit was my first round back from being injured. I got first in the heat race and second in the main event. It was a better night for me, and I’m glad to be back on the podium,” Sexton said.
“It’s been a bit of a struggle, so we’ll take what we can get and turn this season around. I feel good; my riding feels good, and I think this is just the start. I’m excited for the future, and we’ll look ahead to St. Louis now.”
With confidence building and a podium already secured in his return, Sexton now turns his focus to the upcoming rounds as he looks to rebuild momentum in the closing stages of the championship.
