Chad Reed closes the gap back up with a win in San Diego

Yamaha's Chad Reed has had a breakthrough win at Qualcomm Stadium, San Diego, CA to put the brakes on James Stewart's growing points gap at round 7 of the Amp'd AMA Supercross Championship, whilst in the West Coast Lites class Monster Energy Pro Circuit's Ryan Villipoto wrapped up the championship with a win and one round still remaining Whilst it was ultimately a mistake by James Stewart, when the Monster Energy Team Kawasaki rider clipped a tough block and crashed that made Reeds win a certainty there was still a pretty close race before this happened. After overcoming Holeshot winner Ivan Tedesco the duo where locked together for the opening laps as has been the case in the prior six rounds. After Reed hit a same tough block he did lose a couple of seconds but was well and truly still in the hunt for the win. On the following lap it all came undone for Stewart as he was left standing on the top of a jump after getting squirly and his bike dive bombed the stadium floor on the other side. This left Reed the door to victory as Stewart had to scurry to collect his bike and then get it straightened in the mechanics area. By the time Stewart re-joined the track he was amazingly still in tenth place. With Reed himself having to make a major mistake to lose, the 60,000 fans on hand where then focused on how far Stewart could climb back. Stewart's team-mate Tim Ferry was having another stellar ride and held down second with a rejuvenated Kevin Windham in third. It took up until Lap 18 until Stewart finally got past WBR Suzuki's Michael Byrne for 5th. He did have his sites set on Tedesco in fourth but with a lap and a half remaining and a 14 second gap it was never going to happen - even if it was James Stewart. In the end Reed took a much needed win and closed the points gap to Stewart back up to 12 after it threatened to be a full race at the end of the day had Stewart won. ‰ÛÏI love this place,‰Û
