Australia claim Oceania Motocross Championship honours

Australia has claimed the Oceania Championship for the third year in a row on the back of a strong performance by it's Lites and Junior riders at the iconic Barabool motocross circuit just outside of Geelong, Victoria, over the weekend.

World Championship top runner Josh Coppins once again lead the Kiwi charge and took out the Pro Open class in fairly easy fashion ahead of his compatriot Daryl Hurley. American motocross legend Ryan Hughes rounded out the Pro Open podium with third overall. ‰ÛÏI really enjoyed myself this weekend‰Û

A couple of notable performances in the Open class where the No Fear Honda duo of Craig Anderson and new recruit Daniel McCoy. Anderson looked sharp and was back to his holeshotting best with no one able to beat the former champion to the first corner. McCoy, who has only just started to become familiar with the Honda after missing the 99% of the motocross season with injury looked comfortable and fast and will be a top contender. West Australian Michael Addison was probably the stand out as the Pro Lites privateer stepped up to the Open class for the event. Addison was fast out of the gate and ran top three but a run in with Hughes in the final saw him DNF with a broken break pedal. In 2008 he will be on the big bikes and on yesterday's form will cause a lot of concern for the open class regulars. While the Kiwi's dominated the podium in the Open class it was the Aussies that dominated the Lites class with current Australian Motocross Champion Jake Moss taking the top spot on the podium. It was close for second with Cameron Taylor getting the nod over Lewis Stewart on count back. The podium could very well have looked a lot different had it not been for some prominent crashes. Moto one saw new team Kawasaki recruit Luke George dominate after overcoming holeshot king of the day Danny Anderson. Anderson, like his older brother, was unstoppable out of the gate and took every holeshot on the day. After the first moto victory it looked like George was the man to beat but in the second moto he was involved in a nasty first turn crash that saw him hospitalised with a nasty gash in his hip/stomach area and concussion.

Moto two saw Luke Burkhart take the win and get some valuable points on the board for the Kiwis, but his day was ruined in the first moto when he crashed of the start and had to try and get back into the action form half a lap down. New Zealand's other Lites representative Damien King also went down with Burkhart in the opening moto and struggled for the rest of the day. Adding to New Zealand's woes in the Lites was Michael Phillips who also didn't get on with lady luck as he had his goggles smashed of whilst running in a top three spot in the opening moto. One of the features of the Oceania meeting is the Shoot Out race that pits two riders against each other for one lap. The winner progresses while the loser drops out. This is a great spectacle and got the crowd right into it. Josh Coppins won the Open class while Jake Moss took the Lites. With one lap to prove themselves riders gave it their all and a lot of the racing came down to the last corners. Motorex KTM's Tye Simmonds lead an Australian assault in the juniors with the Australian Champion taking out the class ahead of new Ross Beaton who was making his debut with Yamaha. Hamish Dobbyn kept the Kiwi's in the Hunt with third. As expected Women's World Champion Katherine Prumm owned the women's class with three straight moto victories and a faultless display of style and speed. Australia's Kristy Gillespie took out second after rebounding strongly from a crash in the opening moto with two second places and a third. Kawasaki's Ashley Bates took the final step on the podium to ad more points to the Australian tally. Main Photo: Josh Coppins (6) and Craig Anderson battled hard in he early part of each moto
