Andreas Jonsson wins $110,000!

Posted:

Andreas Jonsson is now $110,000 richer - for just one minute of toil. The 27-year-old Swede completed the 2007 world speedway title in stunning fashion, storming to victory in the German GP on October 13. It was the third GP victory for the 2000 world junior champion, and certainly his most profitable. The massive amount of money was on offer to commemorate the 100th GP since 1995, and Jonsson stepped up to the plate from the start of proceedings, eventually finishing with a table-topping 12pts in his five preliminary rides, ahead of Australian's Jason Crump (11). Both Jonsson and Crump eventually made it through to the final, where they were joined by the second Australian, Leigh Adams, and American Greg Hancock. Despite unbelievable tension before the final, Jonsson played it cool from the start, waltzing to victory ahead of Hancock, Crump and Adams. Even with the victory, there was still a tinge of disappointment for Jonsson at the Veltins Arena in Gelsenkirchen, as he fell just short of automatic entry into next year's championship. Only the top eight get that privilege, with Jonsson, who missed one round with injury, ending the year in ninth place on 90pts - just behind the trio of Scott Nicholls, Rune Holta and Chris Harris. However, Jonsson is expected to get a reprieve, as next year's 16-rider field will be completed by three qualifiers and five 'invitations', of which the Stockholm-domiciled rider is expected to be one of those. Meanwhile, just as he had promised, Crump gave his all in Germany to take home the mega loot, but he just didn't have enough left in the tank to get himself over the line. It's now the first year since 1999 that Crump, a dual world champion, has gone without a win. Instead, newly crowned world champion Nicki Pedersen (three wins), Adams (three), Jonsson (two), Harris (one) and Tomasz Gollob (one) did all the winning in 2007, after what has been a pulsating year of competition. Adams, in what could quite possibly have been his last world speedway round, was hardly on the radar early on in the final round, and was even on the verge of missing out on the semi finals before he scored a win in his final heat. That was just enough to get him through on a countback, and then his resurgence continued with a victory in the second semi final ahead of Crump, Bjarne Pedersen and Hans Andersen. The other semi final was won by Hancock from Jonsson, with Holta and Nicki Pedersen eliminated. Meanwhile, Holta, Nicholls and Harris went into a tense run-off before the final to see who would get the final two automatic places for 2008. Holta and Nicholls duly booked their places, but only after the British duo touched at the start of the dramatic last lap, with Harris falling, but Nicholls racing on for second place. Earlier, Harris, this year's British GP winner, put in yet another below par performance to fall back into the clutches of Nicholls and Holta. However, like Jonsson, the up and coming Brit is likely to receive a 2008 invitation in the weeks ahead. GERMAN GP RESULTS
