Cam Dillon - double NZ Motocross Champion.
A record 350 juniors were in attendance at Mosgiel, just over the hill from Dunedin, New Zealand, for the 30th three day event over the weekend of the 13-14-15th of April. The 2.100 Km track is on Kevin McAlwee's working farm and what a great effort the Mosgiel District Motorcycle Club had gone to. The long Holeshot went left, then into a sweeping right then a tighter left before they attacked the very big hill section. Coming off the hill there was a challenging supercross section that ran the length of the floor of a valley and back again with a whoops section thrown in for good measure. The general consensus of the riders was the track was "just awesome". For the previous month they had temperatures in the early 20's and even had a helicopter watering the hill section during Thursday's sign-on. Friday's practice included qualifying for three classes plus Round 1 of 7 Rounds. It was now appalling weather. A lowly 4 degrees with showers, wind squalls and even light snow. It started muddy as well but soon turned the track to 'tacky' - perfect track conditions. Saturday was marginally better with 9 degrees but the wind was still very cold. Sunday was a welcomed 12 degrees but the wind chill was still there. Officials paid their respects to Manawatu's 12 year old Nathan Fitch who had died suddenly, the night before flying down to Dunedin, as the result of a BMX crash. As a result several Manawatu boys never made the journey. Condolences to Nathan's family. On the Saturday too much time was lost at the starts. Before races all riders were sent out on a look lap then reformed on the dummy grid before going to the line. It was actually wasting time as everyone knew their gate numbers. They ran out of clock so the Support classes missed their third race. The Club were quick to sort it for Sunday. There would be no look laps as all riders were given 30 minutes to walk the regroomed track. They also doubled up two classes with split starts and the day ran like clockwork. They actually got in 27 races and the Support classes got their extra race- well done.
A dominant performance from Cam Dillon.
8-10 yrs 85cc - The first of the hard luck stories goes to Brandon Tipene (KTM-Dairy Flat) who had two punctures but still managed to come home 2nd overall. An after- market wheel fitted with the wrong rim-lock being to blame. In R1 he was lucky to get home in 3rd with the first puncture but in R3 (on his 11th birthday) it was the cause of a DNF. 1st place was taken by visiting Australian Jesse Dobson (KTM). 1st Jesse Dobson 157
2nd Brandon Tipene 145
3rd Hadleigh Knight 135
4th Cody Murphy 129
5th Conrad White 117

11-12 yrs 85cc - This class produced very exciting holeshots with the lightweights always to the fore. The expected battle between Campbell King (Mosgiel-CR) and Joel Doeksen (Clevedon-YZ) did not disappoint. King, the much lighter of the two was in command and won Otago's first Junior National title in 22 years. Logan Blackburn (Tauranga-YZ) was always on the pace but two DNF's due to wrong oil in the gearbox blew his chances - literally ! Callum Moore (Featherston-YZ) was the 'find' in this class. Moore is trained by Cory Sargeant and it showed. Whilst you can't mention them all Chase Smith (Kumeu-KTM) deserves mention with his fine 6th place. 1st Campbell King 175
2nd Joel Doeksen 145
3rd Callum Moore 130
4th Hamish Harwood 122
5th Dion Picard 94

13-16 yrs 85cc - Cambridge's Kieran Leigh (YZ) was the absolute master and he was Champion with still one race to go. Hamish Dobbyn (Warkworth-YZ) had one second place before crashing out in the 250cc class. That was even after he stalled on the line having only just got off the 250 from qualifying. The real battle was between 3rd and 4th and they were certainly handlebar to handlebar. You may recall last year the Kayne Lamont (Mangakino-YZ) missed a 1st in class by one miserable point and this year he missed 3rd by the same margin. 1st Kieran Leigh 175
2nd Kieran Scheele 146
3rd Isaiah McGoldrick 132
4th Kayne Lamont 131
5th Joshua Lynch 112

12-16yrs 150cc - This was to be the first of two National titles for Cam Dillon (Mangakino-CR). Only Honda have their CR150R on the market and the result was a small field of only 13 riders. On Sunday when the organisers were pressed for time they were combined with one of the 85cc Support classes. Dillon was in complete control. I can't give you 4th and 5th as mylaps.com has been down all day and I never photographed the result sheet. 1st Cameron Dillon 175
2nd Ben Dowman 152
3rd Bjarne Frederiksen 132

12-14 yrs 125cc - This was to be the second of two National titles for Cam Dillon (Mangakino-CR) who rode fast and controlled and won the 6 of the races but in R5 went over the bars avoiding a lapper on the tricky ski-jump. Some of the riders in that race were actually blown off the race line on that jump. Dillon quickly got back to 2nd. 2nd to 4th could have gone to either of the three. Good to see Flavell back on the pace. 1st Cam Dillon 172
2nd John Phillips 146
3rd Ricoh Flavell 138
4th Tom Managh 132
5th Dylan Miles 108

15-16 yrs 125cc - You have to finish to win but it annoys me when you read elsewhere, when three contenders for these podiums who all crashed out, never got a mention. First to go was the favourite Hamish Dobbyn (Warkworth-YZ). He had a 1st in R1 before crashing out in the 250cc class. Then in R5 Matt Prumm (Bombay-KTM) crashed in the whoops and hurt his back. Ethan Martens (Waitakere-YZ) had the race won when he too crashed on the very last tabletop and broke his arm. Luke Temple (Ngatea-YZ) and Scott Barr-Smith (Tauranga-YZ) went into the last race on even points but it was Temple who won it. Like I said you have to finish to win it. To me the 'find' of the day was Barr-Smith who led most races from the holeshot. Aaron Stone (Huntly-KX) was unlucky not to have done better for it was his two 5th places that hurt his chances. In R5 he was leading and crashed after being passed by Temple. It was not a heavy handed move as was suggested. 1st Luke Temple 148
2nd Scott Barr-Smith 145
3rd Aaron Stone 135
4th Matthew Sutherland 113
5th Michael Smith 107

14-16 yrs 250cc - The 'buzz' was as to who would win this class between Dobbyn and Henry Madams (Wellington-KTM). Madams was quickest in practice by 1.383 seconds but it was all over in R1 because Dobbyn crashed (not his own fault) and it was thought he had a broken femur. Lucky for him it was only a large Temple, a fine 2nd. Matt Prumm had a 2nd in R2 and a 5th in R3 but that came to an end when he crashed in his 125cc race. Michael Litt (Whitianga-KTM) was impressive in the holeshots. 1st Henry Madams 175
2nd Luke Temple 136
3rd Michael Smith 123
4th Michael Litt 113
5th Adam Rutten 102

Great event with excellent racing, plenty of food, nice people, great band at prize giving all made for a great weekend. Congratulations to the new Champions and thankyou Mosgiel District MCC.
