Checking in with Jemma Wilson
We check in with Jemma Wilson, who is currently halfway through her second year competing in the Women's World Enduro Championships.
Wilson raced the majority of the World Enduro Championship last year along with the Australian Off-Road Championship and was having a great season until disaster struck in August.
A double ankle break left the Queenslander not just sidelined, but unable to walk for a couple of months as she first waited for both of her ankles to heal, then start rehabilitation in order to get back to full fitness.
The injury not only put an end to the her World and Australian championship campaigns, it also meant she could not compete at the International Six Day Enduro for Australia.
The two time Australian Off-Road Champion is back racing full time this year for the Johansson MPE Honda team which is based in Sweden and is currently racing full time in the World Enduro Championships.
Wilson also plans to head back to Australia for the 2013 Australian four day enduro which is being held in Western Australia in July and has also been selected to represent Australia at this years International Six Day Enduro.
Read below as Jemma takes us through her opening Two rounds of this years 2013 Women's World Enduro Championship
The first four rounds of the EWC´s went OK for me.
We started in Spain, in some hot and crazy dusty conditions. There were a few tricky bits out there in trail that caught me out at the beginning of the day and the trail time was really tight.
So for the first day I got 7th, but was happy that I made it through and got alot better by the end of the day. I still managed a second in a test, so I had flashes of speed but nothing consistent.
Round two was a fair bit better for me. It was as though my body and head were both like, ´oh, that´s right, this is what we do. Ride through the bushes for hours and enjoy it! I felt much more comfortable on the Sunday and managed a 5th and made podium in a few tests.
Rounds three and four were in Torres Vedras in Portugal, the same location for last years rounds, which meant that I went into the weekend at least having an idea of what the trail was going to be like.
It rained a few days leading up to the event and the ground there is clay and was threatening to be unbelievably slippery so FIM made the times quite loose and the trail a little easier than usual and it ended up drying out so the trail made for a bit of fun.
I feel like I rode better in Portugal, I was much more comfortable on the bike and even managed to do a fair few of the drop offs in the tests. At the beginning of the weekend I was too scared to do the drops because that was how I broke my ankles last year and I had a huge brain block as I would ride up to them.
I managed to get my head around it by the end of the weekend! I got third in quite a few of the enduro tests and almost all of the cross tests but my extreme test ability is still letting me down.
At the end of the two weeks I got a 7th, a 5th and two 6th´s which certainly are not the best results but without making excuses I have just come back from a pretty shitty injury and am happy with my progress. I now know where I stand amongst the girls and know what I need to work on for Romania.
I have an amazing team, Johansson MPE, and an incredible fiancée who are both backing me 100%, so I am hoping to make them both proud in Romania!
Unfortunately since speaking to Jemma, things have gotten a little tough and with funds starting to dry up, Jemma is very getting very close to being in a position that will see her have to come back to Australia earlier than planned and in turn miss the remaining rounds of the World championship and potentially also leave her unable to ride for Australia in this years International Six Day Enduro.
